All Hallows Church Pew Sheet For service times and for more information, please go to our website: www.allhallowstwick.org.uk or contact the Parish Office (details overleaf) The Feast of the Epiphany 5th January 2014 This morning we welcome Rafferty Greenway and James Winters as they are baptised during the service First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Intercessions Chalice Isaiah 60.1-6 Stephen Gregson Ephesians 3.1-12 Ruth Pink Matthew 2.1-12 Alan Green Alison Benz & Otto Benz OFFERTORY HYMN 1. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2. Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining; low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. 3. Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine, gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? 4. Vainly we offer each humble oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure: richer by far is the heart’s adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. OPENING HYMN 1. We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star: 5. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. COMMUNION HYMN 1.Earth has many a noble city; Bethl’em, thou dost all excel: out of thee the Lord from heaven came to rule his Israel. 2. Born a King on Bethlehem plain, gold I bring, to crown him again, king for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign: 2.Fairer than the sun at morning was the star that told his birth, to the world its God announcing, seen in fleshly form on earth. 3. Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a deity nigh; prayer and praising, gladly raising, worship him, God most high: 3.Eastern sages at his cradle make oblations rich and rare; see them give in deep devotion gold and frankincense and myrrh. 4. Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone-cold tomb: 4.Sacred gifts of mystic meaning: incense doth their God disclose, gold the King of kings proclaimeth, myrrh his sepulchre foreshows. 5. Glorious now behold him arise, king and God and sacrifice. Heaven sings: ‘Alleluia’, ‘Alleluia’, the earth replies: 5.Jesu, whom the Gentiles worshipped at thy glad Epiphany, unto thee with God the Father and the Spirit glory be. GRADUAL HYMN 1. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him; the Lord is his name. RECESSIONAL HYMN 1. As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold, as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee. 2. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine: truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the off’rings to lay at his shrine. 3. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling and hope for our fear. 2. As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour to thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before thee whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy-seat. Next Sunday: The Baptism of Christ First Reading: Isaiah 42.1-9 Gill Shepherd Second Reading: Acts 10.34-43 Peter Collins Intercessions: David Brown Gospel Reading: Matthew 13.13-end Chalice: Charlotte Ryton & Robert Irvine 3. As they offered gifts most rare, at thy cradle rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin's alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee our heavenly King. 4. Holy Jesus, every day keep us in the narrow way, and, when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. 5. In the heavenly country bright need they no created light; thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there for ever may we sing alleluias to our King.
