MAKING OF A NATION
HERITAGE AND HISTORY IN ICELAND
The National Museum’s permanent exhibition includes some 2,000 objects dating from the Settlement
to the present day and includes multi-media displays, telephone connections with the past, fun and
education, games, information folders, and more. A tour of the permanent exhibition is a remarkable
journey through time that begins in the ship of the settlers and ends in a modern airport.
The National Gallery of Photography, May 5 – August 26
THE VISITOR’S EYE
The Norwegian entrepreneur Hans Wiingaard Friis fished for cod out of Hafnarfjörður in 1906–1909.
His photographs of Icelandic fishing villages are a fascinating documentation of life and culture a
century ago. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Akureyri Folk Museum.
Wall, May 5 – August 26
OFF TO THE COUNTRY
When ties between rural and urban areas in Iceland were still strong, town children were often sent to
the country during the summers. The National Museum presents an exhibition of photographs
documenting that time.
Arc Hall, May 19 – September 30
WAYS IN BETWEEN
The artists Guðbjörg Lind Jónsdóttir, Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir and Kristín Jónsdóttir from Munkaþverá
explore the national heritage in their work, linking new works with museum artifacts. Each expresses
the idea of a pathway between places, individuals, or time periods in their own unique way. The
exhibition is an ode to the fragmented heritage that is preserved in the National Museum.
Research Exhibition, June 6, 2007 – January 27, 2008

PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARY ELLEN MARK
World-renowned US photographer Mary Ellen Mark visited Iceland last year and photographed
disabled children in their day-to-day environments. The photographs highlight the communication and
friendship between the children. During the exhibition a documentary by filmmaker Martin Bell will be
shown daily in the National Museum’s lecture hall. A substantial catalogue will be published in
connection with the exhibition.
