Salary Range
$17.23-$22.39
POSITION SUMMARY:
Incumbent is under the general supervision of another Biologist (Intermediate or Senior
Biologist). Incumbent will be responsible for implementation of fisheries related investigations.
Provides technical support and assistance to other professional fisheries personnel engaged in
scientific and technical work in the fisheries biology field. Employee’s duties will include
fieldwork as well as office work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This position may include the following):
1. Assist Senior Fisheries biologist in providing field coordination and guidance for habitat and
biological survey crews, juvenile out-migrant trapping projects, research projects and other
fisheries related field activities.
2. Under the guidelines of habitat assessment and biological survey methodologies, leads field
crews collecting and compiling data.
3. Includes training, coordination, and supervision of field crews conducting fisheries survey
and monitoring activities.
4. Conduct literature research, compile and analyze collected field data. Uses collected field
data to create written data summaries, analysis and final reports.
5. Operates computers and standard software to create necessary reports, analyses and
correspondence as needed.
6. Operates and maintains boats, motors, nets, fish traps and other fisheries equipment, as
well as passenger vehicles and light trucks.
7. May be assigned other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a supervisory position.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge of life history strategies and habitat requirements of anadromous fish species
important to the Yurok Tribe, including Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, coastal
cutthroat trout, green sturgeon, lamprey and eulachon.

2. Knowledge of and experience in conducting basic fisheries surveys, including habitat
mapping, spawning and carcass surveys, out-migrant trapping, direct observation surveys
(snorkeling) and Electro-fishing techniques.
3. Basic computer skills, such as data base management, GIS, and statistical analysis software.
4. Experience supervising others and providing data quality control.
5. Skills and experience in operating and maintaining boats, motors, nets, fish traps and other
fisheries equipment and passenger vehicles and light trucks.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to supervise field crews in an organized, productive manner while maintaining a
positive and safe work environment.
2. Practical knowledge of record keeping, data storage and accumulation, data recall,
organization and presentation.
3. Skill in presenting data and its analysis, discussions and recommendations in a form
requiring a minimum of review and editing.
4. Ability to organize and implement sound plans, procedures and schedules.
5. Skill in writing and oral expression.
6. Familiarity with computers, including prior experience using word processors, database and
spreadsheet programs.
7. Ability to demonstrate originality and good judgment in adapting accepted practices and
procedures required to accomplish specific tasks under changing or unexpected
circumstances.
8. Possess a valid California Drivers License.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Biology, Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management or
closely related field.
OR
Combination of applicable work experience* as shown below and education to equal four
years, with at least two years of college in Fisheries Biology, Biological Sciences, Natural
Resources or a closely related field.
* APPLICABLE EXPERIENCE is that which has provided training in the application of techniques
and process in the fisheries biological area such as harvest monitoring, hatchery management
or habitat and biological surveys. At least on year of experience must be directly related to the
fisheries management field.

Fisheries Biologist I

Requires recurring physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky
terrain; Swimming for long periods, at times in adverse conditions; work under highly
variable environmental conditions; and other physical duties associated with fisheries field
activities.
 Willing to commit to extended fieldwork weeks and travel to remote sampling locations
(potential for negotiated exceptions).
 Employee must be able and willing to work cooperatively and productively with other tribal
fisheries groups and agencies.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short
correspondence, and memos. With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and
small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY:
Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and/or
diagram form. With ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand and
use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with
hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear. The employee
must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
 Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
 Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
 Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial
relationships).
 Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
