NUGENT CARE Nugent Care is the social work service of the Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool. The origins of Nugent Care date back to Victorian Liverpool and the pioneering work of Father James Nugent (1822-1905) in relation to child welfare, poverty relief and social reform. Today Nugent Care is one of the leading charities in the North West of England, caring for children, disabled and marginalised people of all ages. We continue to fulfill a major social welfare role throughout the North West by acting as both a service provider and a major employer. CLARENCE HIGH SCHOOL The School is a Residential School which is registered with and approved by the DFE. It can accommodate up to 46 pupils, which includes 14 places within its Children’s Home Provision. The children are referred to the School by Education or Social Service authorities. They would have been assessed as having behavioural, emotional, or social problems, and are Statemented under the 1981 Education Act. The Working Day The school operates from 8.30 a.m. to 3.40 p.m. with a break of reasonable length at lunchtime. ACCOUNTABLE FOR All matters of delegated authority relating to the teaching and care of children in a residential school setting. 6. COMMUNICATION 6.1 The Teacher must keep the Principal, Vice Principal and his/her Line Manager fully informed of all matters of concern within his/her delegated authority and must consult Senior Staff if these matters involve parents or outside agencies. The Teacher must communicate all matters of concern to relevant Teaching, Care, Domestic and Administrative Staff. 6.2 7. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES To perform the functions and services of a school teacher as described in current School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document and as subsequently amended. 8. RELATIONSHIPS In addition to the relationships determined by the structure and lines of accountability, close working and professional relationships under the supervision of the Principal/Vice Principal should be maintained with: 8.1 8.2 8.3 8.4 Teaching colleagues and relevant Nugent Care staff; Members of Care Staff; Outside Agencies – schools, Local Authorities, families etc. in accordance with School policies; Professional support – education advisers, psychologists, doctors, etc. 9. KEY AREAS OF WORK 9.1 You are required to carry out the duties of a schoolteacher as set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, and as subsequently amended. Ensuring that anti-discriminatory practices are maintained throughout Nugent Care. 9.2 Note The terms and conditions of service of teachers employed by Nugent Care, while similar to those offered by Local Authorities differ in some respects. SAFEGUARDING Ensuring safe practice guidelines are followed and Safeguarding policies and procedures are adhered to 14. ADDITIONAL DUTIES It is the nature of the work of Nugent Care, that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff are, therefore, expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises when tasks which are not specifically covered in their job descriptions have to be undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and they will normally be compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or task becomes a regular or frequent part of the member of staff’s job, it will be included in the job description in consultation with the member of staff. 15. BASIC PRINCIPLES The postholder is expected to be familiar with and have regard to the Basic Principles of Nugent Care and work within that framework. He/she must be prepared to operate within Catholic Establishment, but ensure that the spiritual needs of people of all denominations and religions are met. 19. QUALIFICATIONS The person appointed will be a fully qualified teacher. 20. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The Salary Conditions of Service are set out in the Nugent Care Teachers Handbook Nugent Care has a probationary period of up to twelve months. A probationary appraisal will take place at nine months with an initial performance review at the six month stage.
