NAFSA: Association of International Educators Volunteer Position Description Position: Career Center Adviser Committee: Membership Committee (MC) Appointed by: Chair of the Membership Committee Term Dates: Two Years (January 2011-December 2012) Last Updated: August 2010 Overall Responsibilities The career center adviser monitors and advises on matters relating to the enhancement of the association’s career center and job registry. The adviser solicits information from members on career resources, e-career mentoring, and contributes to the work of the membership committee. Purview/Portfolio The membership committee contributes to NAFSA’s strategic objectives by working on the following goals: “Set standards for the profession of international education and for specific disciplines in the field.” “Contribute to the development of inter-organizational standards to serve the profession of international education.” “Manage member growth strategically, consistent with NAFSA’s core competencies, and with annual review of strategy by the board.” “Manage nonmember participant growth strategically, consistent with NAFSA NAFSA’s core competencies, and with annual review of strategy by the board.” Major Responsibilities: Advise the chair of the membership committee on issues relating to the career center and job registry. Consult with other members on concerns relating to career resources and development. Advise on events held in the career center at the annual conference each year. Advise on expanding opportunities for networking and mentoring individuals at all levels of the association. Contribute to planning and implementation of a worldwide membership recruitment and retention program. Help maintain an overview of numbers and professional responsibilities of members, including members based outside the U.S., to inform the association’s work. Participate in the oversight of policies and practices related to member interest groups. Volunteer Commitment: The appointment is for two years, beginning in January 2011. Upon appointment, the incoming career center adviser should begin researching the position, by interviewing the sitting adviser and the chair of the membership committee. Time Committee: Participate in approximately 2-4 teleconferences and respond to e-mail as you receive them from NAFSA staff liaison. Travel, per diem and lodging expenses are reimbursed for all national meetings, except for those surrounding the annual conference. The travel to/from the annual conference, along with any meals and lodging for meetings before/during the conference, is not covered. Lodging for large meetings (WLM, for example) is provided in double rooms; members may pay the difference between and double and a single if they wish to room alone, assuming space is available. Other operating expenses members incur in their offices/at home, such as copying, phone calls, etc. are not reimbursed. Large copying jobs should be referred to staff. Conference calls are set up by staff and covered by the association as necessary. Relationships with the Staff: The career center adviser works closely with the Senior Director for Member Relations and Leadership Services and his/her staff. Required Qualifications Understanding of NAFSA and its leadership structure. Current NAFSA member. Knowledge of the benefits of NAFSA membership, and skill in articulating them Willingness to promote NAFSA membership. The career center advisor should be familiar with the issues relating to career development of NAFSA membership. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of marketing theory and practice. Familiarity with Microsoft Office. Skill and/or experience in public speaking and/or training.
