LGGA FT Nab etc Field Visit to the Great Harwood Dean and Whalley Nab. (See virtually all of the Millstone Grit in a square mile) Suggested route Start: Meet at Great Harwood Memorial Park, top entrance at the corner of Church Lane / Hindle Fold Lane GR SD734329. List of sites:n.b. The Rough Rock, the youngest of the Millstone Grit and the Haslingden Flags do not unfortunately outcrop on our route but are visible in the Rishton quarries about a mile away. 1. Walk to the outcrop on Hindle Fold Lane: Revidge Grit, lower leaf. SD73252/32968 2. Cliffe Quarry: Upper Kinder Scout Grit. SD731333 3. Then to Bowley Hill: Kinder Scout Grit. SD728333 View the valley formed by the Sabden Shales. 4. Cross to Shawcliffe. Pendle Grit SD721340 then to Warley Wise Grit SD . Noting shallow depression between the two rock types. 5. Proceed along Moor Lane to Horse Bowers, enter via footpath near bungalow on the Whalley Banks road, climb to outcrop at the top of the hill via the rides, see remaining millstone. Warley Wise Grit SD . 6. Proceed down to Whalley for break, possibly at Whalley Abbey café then to Turn Hill outcrop. Warley Wise Grit and glacial features SD738355. 7. Return to Great Harwood via bridle path first to GR SD73605/34599 glacial Sands and Gravels. 8. Alternative 1. Proceed to Egg Syke Brook to see intercalated glacial sands and gravels SD739340. or, Alternative 2. Dean Bridge to see exposure of Parsonage Sandstone SD73605/34599. 9. Return to start. n.b.
