Notes
 All entries refer to the Green River of Kentucky unless otherwise stated
The Green River’s major tributary, the Barren River, is often thought of as an extension of the Green.
Bowling Green, Kentucky, is said to be the Green River’s largest city, even though it is on the Barren
River. From the beginning of river improvements in the 1830s Bowling Green was considered to be the
head of navigation for the Green River. Generally, when speaking of the Green River one is also
speaking of the Barren River.
Str EVANSVILLE (Way 1921?). The author says on page 34 that EVANSVILLE sank in 1880, but there
is some discrepancy here. Later, on page 36, she says: “When the old EVANSVILLE (1921) sank in
1880, Captain Robinson went to Cincinnati to oversee the building of a luxury steamer, the new 194-ton
EVANSVILLE (1922).” Nowhere in Way’s Packet Directory, or any other reference, can I find a steamer
named EVANSVILLE which sank in 1880. According to Way, the old EVANSVILLE (1921) was sold in
1880 and eventually ended up as a rafter on the Upper Mississippi (T0770). The Lytle-Holdcamper List
goes only to 1868, so only one steamer named EVANSVILLE built in 1854 is listed, Way’s number
(1920).
