Why have I been given this medicine? Calcium resonium is used to remove excess levels of potassium from the body, particularly in patients who have kidney problems and those on dialysis. How long must I take this medicine for? Take the medicine as instructed by your doctor or nurse. They should write your dose on this leaflet. If you are unsure please check with them. Borders General Hospital How should I take it? Pharmacy Department Patient Information Leaflet The usual oral dose for adults is 15g three or four times a day. It may be given in a little water or made into a paste with something sweet such as jam or honey. Do NOT mix the powder with fruit squash as this contains high amounts of potassium which will stop the medicine working properly. It is important to sit up whilst taking the medicine so that you do not breathe in any powder into your lungs. The medicine you have been prescribed is called Try to remember to take your medicine as instructed. If you have forgotten do NOT take a double dose the next time but let your doctor or nurse know you have missed a dose. Can this medicine cause any side effects? Like all medicines calcium resonium can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Tell your doctor or nurse straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects: Rash, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue Blood in your sick or black tarry stools. Talk to your doctor or nurse if you get any of the following side effects: Tiredness, confusion, muscle weakness or cramps or a change in heart rate Increased thirst or going to the toilet more often Swelling in your limbs Stomach upset, pain in your gut or blockage of the gut.
