Intensive English as a Second Language Application for Admission IESL Program Office 207 Strickler Hall Louisville, Kentucky 40292 Office: Fax: Email: Web: 502-852-5901 502-852-2880 iesl@louisville.edu www.louisville.edu/english/iesl The Intensive English Language (IESL) Program is a full-time course of accelerated language instruction for non-native speakers who want to increase their proficiency in the language for academic or professional reasons. Our program is located on the 177-acre Belknap campus and is only minutes away from downtown Louisville. Classes are designed to help you develop the necessary skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing so that you can succeed in an academic or professional setting. We will also help you learn about American culture and customs. The program director provides hands-on advising and assistance with the university admissions application process. Successful completion of the Advanced Level of our program is accepted by the university undergraduate Office of Admissions as proof of English proficiency. Recent IESL graduates are currently working toward degrees in the College of Business, Speed School of Engineering, School of Public Health and Information Sciences, College of Music, and the College of Arts & Sciences. Other students return to their home countries after finishing the program with improved English skills that help them in their academic and professional careers. Important Details: Applicants must demonstrate prior formal instruction in English on transcripts. We admit students and issue I-20s for the fall and spring semesters. New students take a placement test on the first day and begin their program of study in one of three levels. Promotion to the next level is based on a designated level of performance on regularly scheduled quizzes and exams throughout the semester. Beginning level students should expect to complete the program in three semesters; intermediate students in two; and advanced students in a single semester. Successful completion of the advanced level also requires satisfactory performance on the program administered institutional TOEFL® ITP. All students are registered for 12 hours of non-degree credit each semester. The 12-credits are awarded upon successful completion of the Advanced Level. This application is for the IESL program only. If you are also interested in applying to the University of Louisville, you must contact the Office of Admissions or check their websites at louisville.edu/admissions or louisville.edu/futurestudents.
