We are now properly on the countdown to Christmas and there will be lots of events in school this half term to celebrate the Christmas period. We shall be selling poppies in school in aid of the British Legion for the rest of this week. If children bring a donation two Y6 pupils will be coming around the classes each day so that children can buy a poppy. We are also selling a range of other poppy merchandise (again in aid of the British Legion) from the school office. Snap bracelets/rulers and friendship bracelets are £1 each, and reflective poppies, wristbands and coloured pencils are 50p each. Please come to the school office if you would like to buy any of these objects. They will all be on sale until Friday of this week. Children in Need day As the theme this year is Fancy Dress we would like all children to come to school on Friday 13 th November in Fancy Dress (anything goes – including face paints if you are happy for your child to be painted for the full day!). We have always been really successful in raising money for this very worthy cause so we would like to ask if your child does come to school in Fancy Dress on the day, please could they bring a donation of a minimum of £1. We will look forward to seeing what they come up with! Christmas Cracker Non-Uniform Day On Friday 27th November we shall be having a non-uniform day for all children in order to collect donations for our Christmas Cracker on 9th December. If your child chooses to come in non-uniform they should bring something that can be sold or used as a prize at our Christmas Cracker. Examples of donations include sweets, chocolates, toiletries, toys, small gifts or bottles. We would also be happy to accept any offers of volunteers to help at the event on 9th December. The PTA meeting on 12th November will be planning for this event so if you are interested in helping please come along! E-safety news Cyberbullying has hit the national press this week, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, in their role as parents, have said that they want to find out what more can be done for young people who are victims of cyberbullying. According to experts, anxiety and depression in teenagers has increased by 70% over the last 25 years, and research shows that this is partly due to the increased use of computers and mobile technology. At Broadgate we are committed to caring for the well-being of our pupils and safeguarding them with regard to new technology is becoming an increasing part of this. With this in mind I would urge all parents to join us in our efforts to educate our young people to use all forms of communication technology sensibly and safely. Please read and discuss with your child, the ‘Responsible Rules for Using the Internet’, which was sent home at the beginning of the year by your child’s class teacher. (Please ask us for another copy if you need one). It is extremely important that passwords are kept safe and secret in the adult world and we need to begin educating our children to do this as soon as they are old enough to use communication technology. Children do not tend to think of online communication as the ‘real world’, so a key misconception is that unkind words are not as serious when typed into a computer or mobile device. However, the effect on a child receiving those messages can be very ‘real’ indeed. For more information google ‘cyberbullying’ or click on: http://www.bullying.co.uk/cyberbullying/ School Christmas Lunch On Thursday 17th December we will be having our school Christmas lunch. This will be available to all children at a cost of £2 (unless your child is entitled to free school meals). We will be sending a letter out nearer the time asking you if you want your child to have it. New Parent Governor I would like to congratulate and welcome Suzanne Rhodes to our governing body having successfully won our parent governor election. Thank you also to Stephanie Taylor and Sarah Duckworth for putting yourselves forward to become a parent governor. It is lovely to know that we have parents so willing to support the school in this way. As you can see from the key dates and events section I have listed just some of the things that will be going on for Christmas. I know it seems a long way away, but I thought it would be helpful for you to have these dates well in advance. I will be sending another newsletter in December which will give you more detailed information about the various events and possibly some additional dates for your diary (particularly for the KS1 Christmas Production). However seeing as how we are still only in November, please have a happy, safe and enjoyable bonfire night on 5 th November! Warm regards, Elaine McLellan
