PAASE Members Give Talks on Disaster Risk Modelling by K. Aviso & R. Tan / Aug 17, 2012 A seminar/workshop hosted by De La Salle University, entitled “A Systems Perspective on Disaster Risk Management,” was conducted last August 17, 2012 at Trader’s Hotel in Manila, Philippines. This event was intially conceived as the culminating event of the recent visit of DOST Balik Scientist and inoperability input-output modelling (IIM) expert, Dr. Joost Santos of The George Washington University. It was originally scheduled to take place on August 10th, but had to be postponed following heavy flooding in Manila during that week; as a result of the delay, talks by Dr. Santos and Krista Yu of the DLSU School of Economics were cancelled. A series of lectures was given by a team of researchers from the Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research (CESDR) at DLSU, led by PAASE member and University Fellow, Prof. Raymond Tan. A talk on water footprint-constrained supply chain optimization was given by PAASE associate member Dr. Kathleen Aviso, while Dr. Michael Promentilla gave a lecture on decision analysis for estimating local climate change vulnerability indices. The seminar/workshop showcased IIM as a systematic framework for modeling and analyzing how the impact of disasters propagate through an economic system, causing “ripple effects” that manifest as lost output. IIM highlights how system losses are magnified due to the interlinkages between economic sectors. The conference was well received and it generated a lot of interest from participants coming from various government agencies, such as DOST (including Assistant. Secretary Maria Lourdes Orijola), the Department of Energy, and the Climate Change Commission. There were also participants from academia and industry.
