CV Fernando Rodríguez
.
PhD in Biology since 1994, I performed my Thesis work on African swine fever virus (19901994) under the supervision of Dr. JAM Escribano at the Research Centre for animal heath
from the Spanish Agricultural Ministry (CISA-INIA).
After one year of postdoctoral stay in the same laboratory, I moved to The Scripps Research
Centre (La Jolla, California) where I stayed during 5 years (1996-2000) to complete my
postdoctoral formation under the supervision of Dr. JL Whitton. My work mostly focused on
developing new strategies to improve the immune responses induced by vaccination, with a
special emphasis on the induction of specific CD8 T-cells responses.
Both the PhD and the post-doctoral stays were funded with competitive fellowships from the
Bask and the Spanish Governments.
In 2001, I decided to accept an offer from the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, and returned
as Principal Investigator with a competitive FIS-research contract to start a new line of
research on leukemia and lymphoma immunotherapy.
Finally, personal and professional reasons, recommended my moving to CReSA (Barcelona),
where he remains since the end of 2003, first with a Ramón y Cajal contract, next with and I3
contract, and since 2011 with a permanent contract fully paid by CReSA.
Principal investigator of more than ten national and international competitive Research
projects, coordinator of 5 different contracts with the pharmaceutical industry, I author more
than 60 international publications and 3 patents in the field of vaccinology.
Since my arrival to CReSA I have supervised 5 phD students, without any doubt MY NUMBER
ONE SATISFACTION SINCE I RETURNED TO SPAIN. All my students are currently working in
national or international Research institutes enjoying their postdoctoral training.
My main responsibility as CreSA researcher is heading a line of Research devoted to develop a
vaccine against African swine fever (ASF), albeit I also have several other marginal duties, such
as forming part of the editorial board of CReSApiens, the divulgation Journal of CReSA or
coordinating international meetings such as the I and II meeting about zoonosis and
emergence diseases, hold periodically at CReSA thanks to competitive and private funding.
Independently of the above mentioned duties, I am currently one of the Coordinators of the
Veterinary Itinerary of the Master of Virology (Universidad Complutense de Madrid-UCM-),
ember of the directory board of the Spanish Society of Virology (SEV) since 2007and secretary
of the society since last August. Also marginal compared to my Research activities, but equally
satisfactory, I am part of the committee in charge of evaluating the phD activities from the
students of the Department of Animal health (UAB). Additionally, I am official evaluator of
RESEARCH projects for the ANEP; Spanish agency for scientific projects and sporadically for
other international agencies, reviewer from multiple prestigious international Journals, mainly
from the virology and vaccinology field and scientific advisor of several private companies.
To finish, I would like to define myself as a collaborative Researcher, demonstrable with the
fact that most of my funded projects and published papers count on partners from very
different nationalities and Research institutions.
