JOB SPECIFICATION
1. PREAMBLE
SOUTHERN ADELAIDE HEALTH SERVICE
The Southern Adelaide Health Service (Southern Health) was established in 2004. It brought
together Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Health Services and Drug and Alcohol
Services Council. It includes Population & Primary Health Care, Southern Mental Health
and Southern Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, and works closely with other
health providers in the southern area. Repatriation General Hospital, a public teaching
hospital, formally joined Southern Health in July 2008, further consolidating the working
relationship formed over the past four years.
With an annual budget in excess of $500M, Southern Health provides care for around
330,000 people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide as well as providing a
number of state-wide services, and services to those in the regional areas.
More than 7,000 skilled staff provide high quality patient care, education, research and health
promoting services.
ACUTE HEALTH
The region provides a range of acute and sub acute health services for people of all ages.
Southern Health has three acute sites: Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and
Repatriation General Hospital.

Flinders Medical Centre is a 566-bed specialist referral public teaching hospital
collocated with the Flinders University School of Medicine and the privately owned Flinders
Private Hospital.
The hospital is the major referral centre for acute care and emergency services in the
southern region of Adelaide. It is one of two major trauma centres in South Australia,
providing an around the clock emergency retrieval service to bring people to hospital by
road or helicopter. Flinders also provides a number of statewide services including the SA
Liver Transplant Service and the SA Eye Bank. It provides cardiac surgery services to the
South East and to the Northern Territory.
Noarlunga Hospital consists of an 85-bed public hospital and a 26-bed private hospital
and is collocated with a range of primary health care services. The hospital provides
medical and surgical services, a satellite dialysis service, outpatient and Emergency
Department services.
Repatriation General Hospital is a 300-bed acute care public hospital specialising in the care
of older people and veterans. The hospital provides a range of general medical and surgical
services to people living in Adelaide, and offers high quality integrated care from the acute
stages through to rehabilitation.
POPULATION AND PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
Population and Primary Health Care is responsible for the delivery of a range of primary
health care services across the southern region.
Health Service Integration is responsible for developing and delivering out of hospital
strategies, hospital avoidance and substitution programs, chronic disease management
programs and aligning aged care services at the acute / community interface, all aimed at
reducing demand on hospitals.
Southern Primary Health focuses on providing preventative and health promoting
programs in the community. Southern Primary Health has sites at Aldinga (Aldinga GP
Plus), Clovelly Park (Inner Southern), Woodcroft, Seaford and Noarlunga, in addition to a
women’s health service (Southern Women’s at Noarlunga), a regional Aboriginal health
team (also based at Noarlunga) and a youth health service (Marion Youth Centre).
SOUTHERN MENTAL HEALTH
Southern Mental Health provides a range of integrated services across community and
hospital settings, targeted at all age groups. Services are provided in collaboration with
non-Government organisations and the Southern Division of General Practice. Specialised
statewide services include those for eating disorders and gambling.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL SERVICES SOUTH AUSTRALIA (DASSA)
Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia provides statewide services and advice for
tobacco, alcohol and other drug issues, including pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs.
DASSA’s mission is to develop and deliver best practice in preventing the uptake of
harmful drug use; reducing the harmful effects of licit and illicit drugs; and offering
pathways out of harmful drug use.

2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties
The Cardiology/Interventional cardiologist will provide comprehensive cardiac care specifically
including a interventional cardiology role across the region. They will also be responsible for
clinical service provision of Inpatient Ward work, Outpatient Clinics, Teaching of Undergraduates
and Postgraduates, Administrative tasks, Research projects and be involved in Professional and
Community Services activities. In addition to services in the Southern Adelaide Health Service
they may provide outreach services to country South Australia and the Northern Territory. High
Professional Standards are expected in line with the current Objectives of Cardiac Services of
Flinders Medical Centre and Southern Adelaide Health Service and responsibilities may change
with further Regionalisational developments.
3. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc)



Participating in a credentialing process in line with Accreditation requirements.
Will be required to undertake a health assessment prior to commencement.
Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the
Department of Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure, storage and transfer of
all personal patient/client information within the Department and throughout its funded service
providers.
 Will be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service and in
rural South Australia and the Northern Territory. This will include clinics at Flinders Medical
Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and Repatriation General Hospital
 Out of hours work will be required.
 On-call arrangements as part of the Interventional Cardiology team would apply as well as
general Cardiology on-call.
 Support values consistent with the aims of the Region, including honesty, respect and
integrity.
 Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Offender History Check.

5. STATEMENT OF KEY OUTCOMES AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES

RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1
Contribute to the effective and efficient management of Cardiac Services, ensuring the
provision of high quality professional medical care by:

Provision of Inpatient Ward Services including Ward Rounds, Consultations, Procedures, Quality
Assurance activities, Discharge Planning, Coding assessments, Undergraduate and
Postgraduate Training.

The provision of Invasive Cardiology services including
 Angiography
 Percutaneous coronary revascularization,
 Management of Structural Heart Disease (within Credentials as defined in the Scope of
Practice)
 Management of Peripheral Vascular Disease (within Credentials as defined in the Scope of
Practice)
 Insertion of Temporary pacing wires
 Pericardiocentesis

Conduct of Cardiology Outpatients and provision of timely communication to General
Practitioners and other referring physicians.

Ensuring the timely documentation of the assessment, management and treatment of patients in
the patients medical record and ensuring timely communication (written and oral) with other
health care professionals e.g. GPs.

Supervision of Advanced Trainees in Cardiovascular Medicine and fellows in Interventional
Cardiology

Formal Teaching of Undergraduate Medical Students such as Tutorials, Problem based learning,
Ward Round, Teaching, Outpatients and involvement in student assessment including
examinations (eg. OSCE).

Assuming responsibility for own professional development and continuing to maintain
professional standards by completing the requirements of the Royal Australasian College of
Physicians MOPS program or its successor.

Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team in the provision of Best Practice Quality Care.

Involvement in Community Outreach Services as required.

Contributes to the successful operation of the hospital by:

Assist in the organisation and efficient management of Cardiovascular diseases.

Functioning in accordance with the vision, mission objectives, by laws and policies of the Hospital
and assist with the implementation of the Hospital’s Business Plan as requested.

within the Hospital and the Community.

Managing self and other staff in accordance with the relevant South Australian Health Care Act
2008 conditions of service and the general public sector aims and standards as per the Public
Sector Act 2009.

Participating in own performance review process, Hospital committees and divisional/unit
meetings as required.
5.3
Contributes to processes to improve services and outcomes by:

Supervising and teaching of medical students, postgraduate internal medicine trainees and other
staff as specified by the head of the unit and/or Division.

Assisting with research activities as specified by the Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine,
Cardiac and Critical Care Services by conducting Cardiology research and collaborate with
other units within the hospital and other cardiology units.

Assisting and complying with the processes and aims of the Flinders Clinical Research Ethics
Committee.

Encouraging and supporting team work and coordination amongst medical, allied health, nursing
and administrative staff to ensure better service outcomes.

In collaboration with other relevant staff, ensure that services are continually evaluated and
improved by participating in clinical reviews, quality improvement programs and using this
information to compare and review outcomes.

Assuming responsibilities for own professional development and meet the requirements for
continuing education as set out by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Maintain accreditation in accordance with hospital policy in advanced CPR and emergency
procedures.

Contributing to the implementation of the Hospital’s plan to obtain accreditation with the
Australian Council of Health Care Standards and assisting with the collection of data for Clinical
Indicators.

Assisting where required with the investigation and prevention of patient incidents and
complaints.

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (those characteristics considered absolutely necessary)
Educational/Vocational Qualifications


Registered as (or eligible to be registered as) a Specialist in Cardiology with the Medical Board of
South Australia and Medical Board of Northern Territory.
Training in Cardiac Electrophysiology as per the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand
Guidelines.
Personal Abilities/Aptitudes/Skills











Proven clinical skills to enable work in General Cardiology, Interventional cardiology, and
Coronary Care.

Experience in cardiac investigations including ECG reporting, holter monitor reporting.
Documented experience in providing Intervention cardiology services including: Angiography,

Participation in the RACP MOPS program or its successor is expected.
Clinical and basic Research experience.
