ALGEBRA I - Enriched Los Altos High School 2007-2008 Instructor: Carol Evans Textbook: Algebra Readiness and Math: Algebra 1 Prerequisites: 8th grade mathematics Length: One Year (2 periods) Credit: 10 units (+ 10 units elective) UC/CSU: Yes/Yes (10 units only) WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT FROM THIS COURSE WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM THE STUDENT COURSE DESCRIPTION: ASSIGNMENTS: The double period Algebra 1 class will focus on the development of number sense and proportional reasoning including the extension of traditional arithmetic to an algebra context. Algebra I prepares students for a subsequent course in either geometry or second-year algebra. Topics covered in Algebra I are: expressions and equations; operations with negative numbers; distributing, axioms, and other properties; quadratic equations; linear functions; properties of exponents and roots; inequalities; and graphing. Lecturing, class discussions, small group problem solving, projects and student’s individual work in class will be the main modes of instruction. The student will be expected to: Come prepared with notebooks, pencil, pen Complete class work assignments in class Complete daily homework assignments before the start of class. Take quizzes and exams. Keep a notebook for notes, class work, /problem of the day, corrected quizzes and exams and a folder for homework(with the corrections) Return parent communication folder weekly Follow student expectation sheet and contract EXPECTED SCHOOL-WIDE LEARNING RESULTS: 1. Critical Thinking Skills will be emphasized in daily collaborative Algebra exercises. Students will learn to evaluate abstract concepts and utilize them in meaningful contexts. Problem Solving Skills are fundamental aspects of understanding Algebra. Students will gain experience in problem solving with homework and in-class assignments. 2. Collaborative Learners-Students will be able to complete cognitive and hands-on Algebra assignments in cooperative student groups. Students will acknowledge their responsibility in the group and be active contributors in various capacities. 3. Self-Directed Learners & Responsible Individuals- Students will develop and demonstrate initiative and responsibility in Algebra by always trying to complete challenging tasks. Students are encouraged to ask for verbal and physical tools to complete these tasks. Students should be able to problem solve independently and create new solutions. 4. Community Participants- Students will learn how Algebra is directly related to their everyday lives. Students will use heterogeneous groups to share and validate each other’s experiences and learning styles. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING: Quarter grades will be determined on the basis of performance on tests and quizzes, completion of homework and class work, notebooks, projects and class participation. Each area of evaluation will be weighted as follows: Tests = 45% Quiz= 25% Homework/Class work/ Notebooks/Projects/Class Participation = 30% For the semester grade, each quarter will count 40% and the final exam 20%. Grades will be assigned on the basis of the following percentages: A 90 to 100% B 80 to 89% C 70 to 79% D 60 to 69% F below 60% GRADE BOOK UPDATE POLICY The online student information system grade book will be updated every two to three weeks. ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in this class is necessary. Excessive tardiness and absences can adversely affect the student’s grade. The LAHS policy for tardiness and excused absences will be strictly adhered to. (See student handbook) LATE WORK/MAKE-UP: Late work will be accepted for a reduced score of 10% per day late. Late work for excused absences will be accepted for full credit. All missed exams and quizzes during excused absences must be made up on the next class day unless a special arrangement is made with the instructor. CLASSROOM RULES: Please see “Student Expectations” sheet for classroom rules. Eating, drinking, chewing gum, and cell phones are not permitted in the classroom. Cheating on any assignment or evaluation will not be tolerated (See LAHS cheating policy) HELP: If a student is having difficulty, he/she is expected to get extra help. The student can seek additional assistance from Mrs. Evans in room 718 brunch, lunch, or after school by appointment.
