CME as a Bridge to Quality: The ACCME Announces
Updated Accreditation Criteria
There has been widespread interest in assuring that CME accredited within the ACCME system continues to
contribute to patient safety and practice improvement, as well as continuing to be based on valid content and
independent of commercial interests.
Incorporating Expectations about California Assembly
Bill 1195 into Element 3.2
The ACCME expects accredited providers to operate business and management policies and procedures of their
CME programs (as they relate to human resources, financial affairs and legal obligations), so that their obligations
and commitments are met (ACCME Element 3.2). As part of this accreditation requirement, the ACCME expects
that accredited providers located in California will be in compliance with all applicable California state laws
regarding continuing medical education delivered in California, including CA AB 1195, enacted in 2005.
The ACCME Has New Bylaws
The ACCME’s seven member organizations have approved the new set of bylaws, which had previously been
adopted by the ACCME Board of Directors on November 16, 2005 (see news release). These approved ACCME
bylaws contain many changes in several areas, including representation on the Board of Directors (Article IV,
Sections 2-6), the addition of a Treasurer as an Officer (Article V) and a new mechanism for the member
organizations to seek reconsideration of Board actions (Article III, Section 2).
ACCME Adopts New Bylaws
At its November 16, 2005 meeting, the ACCME Board of Directors took action to adopt new bylaws for the
ACCME. This action was the culmination of two years of discussion in an open and transparent exchange of
perspectives. We are especially grateful for the work of past and present member organization staff liaisons that
developed the creative approach to retaining the oversight role of the member organizations after it was proposed by
staff of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Identifying and Resolving Conficts of Interest in CME
On September 28, 2004, the ACCME announced its adoption of the "2004 Updated ACCME Standards for

Standards.
New Formats of Continuing Medical Education
The American Medical Association has made several important additions and modifications to AMA PRA Category
1 Credit™. Accredited CME providers can now designate credit for internet searching and learning, test-item
writing, manuscript review, and performance improvement activities. In response, the ACCME expects that the
new formats of continuing medical education will be implemented, and compliance demonstrated, within the current
framework of the ACCME's accreditation requirements and process.
