Southwest Indians – How did the Indians in the southwestern United States live? BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE FOR STAFF 1) Colorado Mammals and Animals The following animals live in the wild in Colorado” a. Big Horn Sheep b. Black Bears c. Coyote d. Elk e. Great horned owl f. Horses g. Marmots h. Mountain Lions i. Mule Deer j. Showshoe Hare k. Box turtles l. Skunks m. Racoons n. Red fox o. Bald eagle p. Mallards We learn a lot about animals from clues they leave behind a. Skat b. Markings on trees (i.e., sharpening claws… c. Tracks Animals can be divided into what they eat o Carnivores – meat eaters like eagles o Herbivores – plant eaters like pronghorn antelope, raccoons, prairie dogs, deer o Omnivores – eat both like bears and humans 2) Fossils Paleontologists are scientists who study prehistoric animals a. They find skeleton fossils and put them together to discover how big dinosaurs were b. They can tell many things from fossils: i. What they ate ii. if they flew or walked on two or more legs iii. if they lived in water Fossils are preserved remains of prehistoric animals or plants 1 Fossils are found in Colorado a. Biped fossils – 2 foot dinosaurs were found just east of the Rocky Mountains – some in Golden and Morrison. 3) Southwest Indians came to this area before Columbus discovered America The landscape of the American Southwest includes: a. Deserts b. mountains The major tribes that lived in the Southwestern United States a. Navajo b. Hopi c. Zuni Life for Indians of the Southwest a. Lived in villages called pueblos i. Homes made out of stone or adobe (mud) and logs & trees ii. Some built their homes in cliffs 1. Documented their living on rock walls b. Food they ate i. Corn was ground down on a large flat stone ii. Beans, squash, nuts c. They ate from dishes called pottery they made themselves i. Made from wet clay ii. Coiled ropes one on top of the other iii. Beautiful patterns d. They made toys and jewelry out of natural objects: stone, wood, string e. They made their own clothing and blankets by weaving i. They used wool from sheep 1. Sheared or cut the wool from the sheep 2. Carded the wool with a tool that looks like a steel dog brush 3. Spun the wool on a spinning wheel 4. Made blankets, rugs and material on a machine called a loom 5. Designs a. Animals - cows, sheep b. Plants – corn c. Environment – mountains, cactus d. The Native Americans of the Southwest came from tribes called Navajo, Zuni, Hopi ii.
