Moana Jackson is of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Porou descent. He is presently Director of Nga Kaiwhakamarama I Nga Ture (the Māori Legal Service) which he co-founded in 1987 Child Rights & Child Health Prof Innes Asher Professor of Paediatrics: Child and Youth Health, University of Auckland, and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, Starship Children's Health.
