Chapter 1 - Eavesdropping
Mat Douglas is waiting for his father to come home so they can go to __________________’s
tangi. Mat’s ancestry is part-_____________ (on his father’s side) and part-___________ on his
mother’s. To reflect this dual heritage, he carved a ___________ pendant for them, one side a
__________ and the other a _________ _________. Mat’s mother now lives in __________
where she works as a ______________. Mat is ______ years old and lives with his father, a

___________, ______________ and ___________________. But Mat has two qualities that
help him; he can be stubborn and he very occasionally gets an urge to do something
_____________________- what he calls his instinct. Just before they leave, Mat retrieves the
koru pendant and puts it on while Tama gets a phone call from a Mr Puarata, who seems to
scare him. Puarata asks about documentation for a ________ _______ and demands Tama’s

As they travel south to the marae, Mat thinks about Nanny Wai-aroha. He’d met her only once,
at his great-aunt _______________’s place. She had been in an _________________ for years
and had ______________ wrists. She helped Mat with his drawing for the ______________ and

The first chapter of any successful novel has to introduce us to the action, the main characters,
the setting and a problem (which is usually multi-faceted, ie. has several aspects). We meet Mat,
who will clearly be the main character, his father, Tama, and a baddie - Mr Puarata. But what is
the multi-faceted problem that Mat faces in this chapter?

how Wiri and Fitzy seemed to _________ each other. Mat woke after a nap to the smell of
________ ____________ roasting over a fire. Wiri was also cooking ________ ________ which
Kelly and Mat initially refused to eat, but then they tried one. Mat decided that Wiri looked like
any other young Maori except for certain aspects – his ___________________, his

After Kelly and Mat tell their stories, Wiri has his turn. He was born around ___________ AD

Puarata said he would stay if Tupu defeated Wiri. And this was the result, because Tupu was

As they travel through the forest near to the __________-__________ Road, a helicopter

in Puarata’s face. Mat, Kelly and Fitzy race away, Mat calling Wiri out of the tiki as they leave.
Wiri deals with one pursuer by ____________________________________________and a gun

hopes is _____________. Soon they are being chased by Tupu so Wiri hangs back, while the
public don’t know if there’s ______________ or __________________. Wiri and Tupu fight until
the cars arrive and gunmen step out. Tama is knocked down for trying to __________________
