Stage 2 Justice in Society – Society and Culture TASK 1 Assessment Type 1: Folio - Topic group 2: Contemporary Challenges Task To discover whether there is community confidence in the way our society responds to criminal offenders. Process Identify one recently completed South Australian criminal prosecution that has attracted public interest. Using whatever print and electronic sources you can locate, determine the events leading up to the prosecution and the outcome of the trial and sentencing of the offender. If the sentence has been handed down within the last month, look for the sentencing remarks of the Judge on the courts website. Read the relevant parts of the Sentencing Act (SA) Write a brief objective summary of the offence, the sentence and the factors the court took into account in deciding the sentence. Write one or two questions that you can use to survey opinions about the outcome of the case. Do NOT allow the questions to give any indication of your own opinion. Add these to your summary Ask at least 10 people to read your summary and answer your questions – they must be a range of people, not just school students and family. Record their answers. Report o o Analyse the response to your questions by writing an overview of whether or not the small cross section of the community feels comfortable with the sentencing process. Evaluate their reasons Give your personal response to both the sentence that was handed down and the understanding that exists in the community.. Requirements This assignment can be written or presented multimodally (eg slide show, web-page). If written it must be 600 words maximum, if in other formats a maximum of 5 minutes or equivalent.
