Biome Specific Food Web
Organisms around the world are very different. One of
diversity of organisms to exist is the different
This is because climates limit the types of plants
how they are dispersed in an area, and the types of
effects what types of animals will live there.
the things that help the
climates or biomes.
that can grow and
plants in turn
The major biomes on the earth are;
Tropical/Temperate Rain Forest
Deciduous
Tundra
Marine
Boreal Forest
Freshwater
Grassland
Desert
Because climate and organisms are very closely linked together, you need to become an
expert on both for one specific biome.
What you need to do…
Research the different qualities of your biome (a minimum of 6 characteristics that
make it unique). If your country has more than one biome, select the one that is
most prevalent, or cover more than one on a smaller scale.
 Find a minimum of 25 common plants and animals in your biome.
o Include at least one endangered species for your biome in your food web.
This should be labeled ENDANGERED on your web.
o If you choose to complete more than one biome food web, the minimum
number of organisms for each biome covered is 15.
***Producers are the base of the food chain. Make sure that you illustrate a variety of
plant life. The number of producers you include in your web should reflect the role that
they play in your biome. Strive for balance…if the animals in your biome are mainly
herbivores, there should be a variety of plants life available to feed them.
NO ANIMALS CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT PLANTS
 Design a display that illustrates a food web that might occur in this biome.
o Be sure to include the qualities and appearances of the biome in the display.
o Show the feeding relationships between the 15/25 organisms that you found
for your biome.
o Place organisms on the display in picture form (drawn, cut out, printed, or
copied).
o Label all organisms must with name and energy role (PRODUCER, HERBIVORE,
OMNIVORE, CARNIVORE, DECOMPOSER OR SCAVENGER)
o The energy flow in your web should be labeled with arrows. Arrows should
be pointed in the direction that the energy flows through the web. (green
from producers to 1st level consumers, blue from 1st to 2nd level consumers,
red from 2nd to 3rd level consumers, and yellow from 3rd to 4th level
consumers) All possibilities must be acknowledged.

Include the following facts as a part of your display.
~ What is the climate and weather of your biome (rain, seasons, temp)?
~ What things (resources) is this type of biome is know for? (list at least 2)
~ Why are most animals well-suited to live here?
~ Why are the endangered species in the biome endangered?
~ What is the environment facing in this area and how is it affecting the various
populations?
