Food Web An Educator's Reference Desk Lesson Plan Author: Zandra Zweering, Williamston Middle School, Williamston, MI Date: 1994 Grade Level(s): 6 Subject(s): Science/Ecology Science/Technology MAJOR OBJECTIVES: To collect data to construct the food web of a community in a particular biome To use the computer to analyze that data To identify the interdependence of organisms in a community/biome To become familiar with what certain animals eat for energy MATERIALS CHECKLIST: One or multiple computers Software: database Large screen monitor or overhead projector with projection panel Teacher-prepared data files and student worksheets TIME REQUIRED: 1+ class periods ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Have the students work in teams of two or more. Discuss group cooperation and behavior necessary to complete the assignment. Discuss the food chain, using an example like "plant --> mouse --> hawk" and asking what each needs for energy. Lead the class to define food web, community and biome. Lead a discussion about various kinds of energy relationships among organisms in a biome. Have the students choose a biome and use the database to do the necessary research to complete the food web on their data table worksheets. Have each team discuss their food webs with the class. FOLLOW-UP/EXTENSION: Have students choose a second biome and complete a new food web. Have them draw their animals/food webs on poster board for display. Discuss variables that would upset the food web. Have the students use the database to determine whether there is a relationship between the animal's size and what it eats. Lead a discussion about variables that might change the food web and move into the overlap/interdependence of different organisms and biomes.
