Adjectives
An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun.
To modify a word means to describe. An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun by
telling what kind, which one, how many, or how much.
What kind?
gentle dog
Which one or ones?
sixth grade
How many or how much?
two tickets
Note. Adjectives usually come before the words they modify. Sometimes, an adjective
comes after the word it modifies.
Example.
The dog is gentle. (The adjective gentle modifies dog.)
The sea, blue and sparkling, stretched out before them. (The adjectives,
blue and sparkling, modify sea.
Proper Adjectives
A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter.
Example:
Japan (proper noun)
Easter (proper noun)
Hebrew (proper noun)
Japanese islands (proper adjective)
Easter Sunday (proper adjective)
Hebrew class (proper adjective)
Demonstrative Adjectives
This, that, these and those can be used as both adjectives and pronouns.
Adjective:
These skates are in the living room.
Pronoun:
These are in the living room.
