Freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates at the upper reaches of the Koito-gawa River. Journal of the Natural History Museum and Institute Chiba Special Issue 7: 47-86. AB - Freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates were inventoried at the upper reaches of the Koito-gawa River, Toyofusa, Kimitsu-shi, Chiba, central Japan. Field collections were carried out from April 2002 through December 2003. In total, 104 taxa, including Trivladida, Decapoda, Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Hemiptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Trichoptera, were listed with some taxonomical and ecological notes. Among seven microhabitat types distinguished in the field survey, species richness and abundance were particularly high in two types, i.e. riffle and woody debris. It is suggested that some other microhabitat types, including plane-bed channel formed on bedrock and its step and/or crack, dripping cliff, pot hole and side pool, are important for some specific taxa. AB - Phase polyphenism is an adaptive phenomenon in which some traits vary continuously in response to population densities. In locusts, two extreme phases, solitarious and gregarious, that occur at a low and a high density, respectively, are known and intermediate forms called transient phase also occur in a transition between the two phases or at an intermediate density. Establishment of an albino strain of Locusta migratoria led to the discovery of a neuropeptide, corazonin that is involved in the control of the expression of some phase-related traits in this and another locust, Schistocerca gregaria. This paper describes a summary of phase polyphenism research with a particular emphasis on recent studies about the roles of corazonin in locusts. In L. migratoria, injection of the neuropeptide causes albino nymphs to express various body colors often observed in not only solitarious but also gregarious forms irrespective of the rearing density. Both juvenile hormone and corazonin are necessary to express the green solitarious form normally observed in the field. It has also been suggested that this neuropeptide may be involved in the control of phase-related morphometric ratios of F/C and E/F (F=hind femur length; C=maximum head width; E=elytron length) as well as the development of antennal olfactory sensilla in the two locusts: injection of the peptide mimics crowding effects, thus inducing gregarious characteristics in solitarious (isolated-reared) locusts. Corazonin and related compounds are widespread among insects. Transplantation of the brain and corpora cardiaca from various donors to albino locusts in dicates the presence of corazonin or corazonin-like substances in all 18 insect orders so far screened except for the Coleoptera. [Author, Reprint Author; E-mail: tokeshi@ambl-ku.jp] (2004): Effects of habitat complexity on benthic assemblages in a variable environment - Freshwater Biology 49(9). September 2004. 1164-1178. AB - 1. Habitat complexity is thought to exert a significant influence on ecological communities, but its operation under variable natural conditions is not well understood, particularly in freshwater. To elucidate the role of habitat complexity, in particular the fractal structure of surface irregularity, in a stream system, field colonisation experiments were conducted at three times of year (summer, winter and spring) using natural substrates with different levels of fractal dimension in a small coastal mountain stream of southern Japan. 2. In the winter experiment, comparison was also made between the standard (control) treatment and the resourcepreconditioning treatment whereby experimental plates were conditioned in the natural stream environment to allow the accumulation of potential food resources (algae and detritus) for 1 month prior to the experiment. 3. Species abundance patterns observed at different times of year showed little systematic variation with levels of habitat complexity but largely followed the patterns expected from, or lying in between, the Random Assortment model and the random fraction model. 4. Taxon richness and density increased with habitat complexity in all seasons except for density in spring. Different taxa showed different patterns of change with habitat complexity, which also varied with seasons. Biomass of invertebrates showed no systematic trend with an increase in habitat complexity. 5. Chlorophyll-a concentrations tended to be lower in more complex habitats, particularly in summer. In contrast, fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) tended to increase with habitat complexity. However, the relationship between these potential food resources and invertebrate assemblages remain unclear. 6. While there were no significant differences in taxon richness and biomass of invertebrates between the resourcepreconditioning and the control treatment, density was higher in the former than in the latter. The abundance of relatively large, surface-dwelling animals showed more marked temporal variation over the entire period of colonisation in the resource-preconditioning treatment than in the control treatment. 7. Body size of invertebrates tended to decline with fractal complexity, indicating that crevice sizes could affect habitat use by benthic animals of different sizes. In addition, body size was larger in the resource-preconditioning treatment than in the control treatment, suggesting that body size in invertebrate assemblages was controlled by a mixture of factors. Thus, the present study demonstrates that habitat structure affects benthic invertebrate assemblages in a complex manner. Abstract: We present a new technique using electrofishing equipment to collect and quantitatively sample stream invertebrates. We used an electrofishing machine with a small anode to produce a localized field of pulsed direct current to induce invertebrate drift. We quickly obtained large numbers of live invertebrates for experiments by passing the anode over the stream bottom upstream of sampling nets. We compared the results of five techniques: (i) electroshocking inside a modified Hess sampler, (ii) repeated electroshocking over a large area to estimate population size by depletion, (iii) traditional Surber, (iv) Hess, and (v) individual stone sampling. Electroshocking techniques provided estimates of invertebrate density comparable with those of traditional sampling techniques. The electroshocking depletion method that sampled a large area provided higher measures of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera richness. Hess and area-restricted electrobug methods had similar density and diversity estimates, whereas the Surber sampler provided low density estimates, especially for mobile taxa. Density estimates from individual stones were inflated, were biased for mayflies, and had low richness. Samples taken with the electroshocking method were processed 40% faster because these samples contained little detritus. Electroshocking techniques can provide accurate estimates of population size and diversity, minimize disturbance to benthic habitats, and reduce processing time. (2001): New data on the stonefly fauna (Plecoptera) of the Northern Kuril Islands. - Russian Entomological Journal 10: 129-132. Abstract: New data on the stonefly fauna of the Northern Kuril Islands (NKI) are presented. Collecting efforts over four-year period (1996-1999) on the islands Onekotan, Paramushir, and Shumshu yielded a total of seven boreal species belonging to seven genera and five families. Five of these species are recorded from the Kuril Archipelago for the first time: Arcynopteryx polaris Klapalek, 1912; Taenionema japonicum Okamoto, 1922; Capnia levanidovae Kawai, 1969; Mesocapnia gorodkovi Zhiltz. et Baumann, 1986; and Podmosta weberi Ricker, 1952. The stonefly fauna of this region contains three zoogeographical elements: (1) East Palaearctic, of Angarian origin, four species, A. polaris, T. japonicum, Alloperla mediata (Navas, 1925), Suwallia teleckojensis (Samal, 1939); (2) Beringian, two species, M. gorodkovi, P. weberi; and (3) autochthonous Kamchatian, one provisional endemic, C. levanidovae. August 2004. 1984-1990. AB: We investigated the acute (5 d) effects of particle-associated azinphosmethyl (AZP) in multispecies microcosms and assessed the results in the context to data obtained from a parallel field study undertaken in the Lourens River, South Africa. A runoff simulation was carried out in stream microcosms containing the macroinvertebrate fauna of an uncontaminated Lourens River site exposed to particle-associated AZP (control and 200, 1,000, 5,000, 20,000 mug/kg; three replicates each) for I h. Measured AZP concentrations in filtered microcosm water resulted in the following values: Not detectable (control) and 0.03, 0.2, 1.1, and 6.9 mug/L, respectively. The two highest treatments resulted in significantly (analysis of variance (ANOVA)) reduced total numbers of individuals, while the number of taxa was affected in the 20,000 mug/kg treatment only. A comparison with previous data suggests that observed effects partly resulted from particle-associated AZP. Particularly affected were six out of 14 macroinvertebrate taxa such as mayfly and stonefly taxa. In parallel, the distribution of macroinvertebrates at a pesticide-free and a contaminated stretch of the Lourens River was monitored five times during the spraying season in 2001 and 2002. Out of the 14 core taxa found in the microcosm study as well as in the field approach, 10 showed comparable reactions in the microcosm experiment and in their field distribution; they were either classified as affected or unaffected in both studies. Thus, we conclude that particle-associated AZP has the potential to affect the invertebrate community structure of the Lourens River and that microcosm studies employing field-relevant exposure scenarios may be valuable for a local risk assessment of pesticiderelated community disruptions in the Lourens River. [Plecoptera] Thiere, G., Schulz, Ralf (2004): Runoff-related agricultural impact in relation to macroinvertebrate communities of the Lourens River, South Africa - Water Research. 38(13). July 2004. 30923102. AB - A field study at the Lourens River, South Africa, was undertaken during the pesticide application period between November 2001 and January 2002 in order to investigate the potential relation of agricultural pollution to the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna. The upper regions of the Lourens River were free of contamination (LR1), whereas subsequent stretches flowing through a 400-ha orchard area (LR2) received transient insecticide peaks. Continuously operating suspended-particle samplers as well as flood samplers operating during runoff events were used to measure pesticide contamination. In addition, various physicochemical and morphological parameters were examined. A survey of the macroinvertebrate communities associated with the rocky substrates was carried out every three weeks. Community indices were calculated using the South African Scoring System (SASS 5) for bioassessment of water quality in rivers. The two sites differed in pesticide pollution as well as in average turbidity levels (LR1 5.5 mg/L; LR2 64.3 mg/L), but were similar in bottom substrate composition and most other abiotic factors. At the downstream site (LR2), pesticide values of 0.05 mug/L azinphosmethyl in water as well as 49 mug/kg azinphos-methyl, 94 mug/kg chlorpyrifos and 122 mug/kg total endosulfan in suspended particles were found during runoff conditions. The macroinvertebrate communities of the two sampling sites were similar in terms of number of total individuals, but differed significantly (ANOVA) in average number of taxa (LR1 11.7, LR2 8.9). Seven out of 17 investigated taxa occurred in significantly reduced numbers or were even absent at the downstream site LR2. The community characteristics determined by SASS 5 showed a significantly less sensitive community structure at the downstream site (TS 41; ASPT 4.6), indicating continuously lower water quality compared to site LR1 (TS 80; ASPT 6.9). It is concluded that the Lourens River macroinvertebrate communities are affected by agricultural pollution, with pesticides and increased turbidity as the most important stressors. Sci. United States Amer. 97: 13178-13183. Insects in the order Plecoptera (stoneflies) use a form of two-dimensional aerodynamic locomotion called surface skimming to move across water surfaces. Because their weight is supported by water, skimmers can achieve effective aerodynamic locomotion even with small wings and weak flight muscles. These mechanical features stimulated the hypothesis that surface skimming may have been an intermediate stage in the evolution of insect flight, which has perhaps been retained in certain modern stoneflies. Here we present a phylogeny of Plecoptera based on nucleotide sequence data from the small subunit rRNA (18S) gene. By mapping locomotor behavior and wing structural data onto the phylogeny, we distinguish between the competing hypotheses that skimming is a retained ancestral trait or, alternatively, a relatively recent loss of flight. Our results show that basal stoneflies are surface skimmers, and that various forms of surface skimming are distributed widely across the plecopteran phylogeny. Stonefly wings show evolutionary trends in the number of cross veins and the thickness of the cuticle of the longitudinal veins that are consistent with elaboration and diversification of flightrelated traits. These data support the hypothesis that the first stoneflies were surface skimmers, and that wing structures important for aerial flight have become elaborated and more diverse during the radiation of modern stoneflies. {PERLA 19} THOMSON, M.S. Growth and emergence of the acidification tolerant stonefly Leuctra nigra were studied in four coniferous forest streams with contrasting pH. Invertebrate samples were taken bimonthly during May 1997 to April 1998. Emerging L. nigra were captured in two of the streams during April to July 1998 using pyramidal emergence traps. In addition, a laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate growth of L. nigra in response to variations in food quality (neutral or acid conditioned leaves) and water pH. 2. The invertebrate community in low pH streams had lower diversity and density compared with neutral streams. Abundance of L. nigra was also lower, despite the dominance of this stonefly in the invertebrate community in the acidic streams. 3. Secondary production of L. nigra was 2.04 and 3.07 g DW m-2 year-1 in the neutral streams compared with 1.02 and 1.27 g DW m-2 year-1 in the acidic streams. The P/B ratio differed only slightly among streams. 4. More adult L. nigra emerged in the neutral stream compared with the acidic stream, despite the density of the pre-emerging fifth instar nymphs of L. nigra being similar in the two streams. Adult size (expressed as wing length) and female fitness were also significantly greater in the neutral stream. 5. Laboratory growth of L. nigra nymphs was significantly lower when fed acid conditioned alder leaves rather than neutral conditioned leaves. There was no difference in growth when nymphs were fed neutral conditioned leaves in acid and neutral water. 6. Our study shows multiple, sub-lethal effects on life history of the acidification tolerant stonefly L. nigra in coniferous streams with low pH. The results suggest that these effects could be mediated primarily by low food quality. These findings add to the existing evidence that coniferous plantation forestry has a negative impact on stream ecosystems. THOMSON, J.R. THOMSON, J.R.; LAKE, P.S.; DOWNES, B.J. (2002): The effect of hydrological disturbance on the impact of a benthic invertebrate predator. - Ecology (Washington D C) 83(3): 628-642. Abstract: The harsh-benign model of community dynamics predicts that, the impact of predation will decline as abiotic conditions become more stressful to biota. Experiments were conducted to determine whether hydrological disturbance altered the impact of an invertebrate predator in stream benthic communities. The impact of a predatory stonefly, Cosmioperla kuna, on its mayfly prey was measured in experimental stream channels receiving constant or variable flow (flooding) regimes over a one-week period. Contrary to predictions of the harsh-benign hypothesis, the impact of Cosmioperla on its two major prey taxa was either unchanged or increased by artificial floods, despite increased predator emigration from variable-flow channels. Predator impacts in variable-flow treatments were apparently strongly influenced by predatorinduced prey emigration during floods. The results of this study show that nonlethal predator effects may be important during abiotic disturbance, and that it may not be reasonable to predict the impact of predation solely on the basis of the relative tolerances of predators and prey to prevailing abiotic conditions. Annales de la Societe Entomologique de France. 40(1): 37-40. In the present study, the decrease in the mean size of specimens over the species flight period in Plecoptera (12 species, 5 families) was analysed, revealing a significant decrease in the adult mean size, for both males and female, in almost all the species without an extended flightperiod pattern. Some of the data show that, in addition to temperature, other regulatory factors must govern these variations. Data support the explanation previously proposed for other insect groups that the individuals with appropriate development emerge at the beginning of the flight period or slightly afterwards, when environmental conditions are suitable, whereas individuals with suboptimal size emerge later trying to increase in size but under pressure to emerge during a specific period of the year. Nevertheless, our data suggest that maximum size does not necessarily coincide with the peak flight period (maximum reproductive possibility). Haemocytes of the stonefly Dinocras cephalotes have been characterized by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), adherence to a plastic surface, and phagocytosis of latex particles. Haemocytes appear to consist of at least two cell populations: granulocytes and plasmatocytes, which can be distinguished by morphological and functional criteria. Morphologically, granulocytes are rounded and vesiculated, while plasmatocytes have an irregular shape, with many filopodia, and a slightly vesiculated content. Culturing haemocytes "in vitro" resulted in the spreading onto the surface of an adherent population (plasmatocytes), and in a loosely attached population (granulocytes). Phagocytosis assay showed the capacity of D. cephalotes plasmatocytes to engulf exogenous particles. Haemocytes of adults and nymphs of D. cephalotes were also analysed by flow cytometry and compared with those of Perla grandis, another species of Perlidae. We observed a slight difference in haemocyte morphology among nymphs and adults, and a shift of cell populations was also detected. The results show a very similar call, and the absence of dialects, despite the high interpopulation genetic variability shown by this species. It is discussed the ancestry of the D. cephalotes call: monophasic and composed by a low number of beats. The call is compared with drumming of other Systellognatha and Euholognatha species. Also, is stressed the heterogeneity of this species call, despite being a simple model. Roma TIERNO DE FIGUEROA, J.M.; FOCHETTI, R. (2003): Feeding in the genus Tyrrhenoleuctra (Plecoptera, Leuctridae). - Bollettino de la Società Entomologica Italiana, 134(3): 207-210. The gut content of adults (males and females) and nymphs of Tyrrhenoleuctra species was studied. The diet turned out to be composed fundamentally of ascomycetes as regards to the adult stage and of detritus for the nymphal stage. The results seem to show that feeding can be more important for the females during the eggs maturation rather than after that. The present study suggests that feeding is an important aspect of adult stonefly biology, contrary to what believed and accepted previously, at least for small sized stoneflies (less than 1,5 cm length) with high metabolic rates. (2002): The mating call of Isoperla bipartita Aubert, 1962 (Plecoptera, Perlodidae). - Aquat. Insects 24(2): 87-90. The mating call of Isoperla bipartita is described. The male call is composed of 3-10 groups, each of 1-4 rubs. The times between rubs average 89.52 msec (between first and second), 43.52 msec (between second and third) and 35.28 msec (between third and fourth). The time between two groups averages 180.75 msec and varies from 142 to 290 msec. The female answer is composed of a beat and rub repeated at 479.09 msec intervals on average and interspersed between the male call groups between 94 and 184 msec (mean=118.11 msec) after the last rub of the male group. The I. bipartita call can be considered as a 'complex and modified pattern' because the male produces calls of 1-4 rubs by group and the female answers overlapping the male call by percussion-rubbing-produced signals. Moreover, it is different from other studied Iberian Isoperla calls, being probably a species-specific behavioural pattern. [NABS bibliography 2002] TIERNO, J. M. & A. TURNBULL, D.K.R.; BARMUTA, L.A. (2002): Substrate complexity influences the preference of a predatory stonefly, Eusthenia costalis Banks (Plecoptera: Eustheniidae), for its prey. - Arch. Hydrobiol. 155: 481-492. Prey selection of the stonefly Eusthenia costalis was investigated by presenting late instars with a choice of three different prey species (Nousia sp. Navas (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae), Neboissoperla sp. McLellan (Plecoptera: Gripopterygidae) and Antipodeus sp. Williams and Barnard (Amphipoda: Paramelitidae)) or two distinct size classes of Nousia. To determine whether substrate complexity influences the foraging preference of E. costalis selection trials were conducted using two different levels of substrate complexity: "fine" (sieve dimension 1-4 mm), and "coarse" (8-16 mm); Stonefly nymphs selected Nousia in fine substrate and Neboissoperla in coarse substrate. Stonefly nymphs were not selective, based upon the size of Nousia prey in fine substrate, however, they preferred large Nousia in the more complex substrate. Irrespective of substrate complexity, as the size of E. costalis nymphs increased preference for Neboissoperla declined. Turnbull, Derek K.R.; Barmuta, Leon A. 2002.
