Unique clinical or rotation experiences:

Our residents will enjoy extensive access to the simulation and skills labs. Training will be provided in basic and advanced airway techniques, multiple medical arrest scenarios, and trauma scenarios. The SIM sessions will be combined with team-based training for codes in the ED. Ultrasound will be integrated into everyday practice, as well as skills lab training in US techniques and procedures. Our residents will enjoy a strong educational experience on their off-service rotations due to the presence of wellestablished residencies and fellowships through SIU School of Medicine.

Unique didactic activities:

Our didactic program will consist of small-group, case-based interactive sessions that will focus on content from The Model of Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine. We will cover all topics important to EM, including toxicology, trauma, pediatrics, EMS, cardiology, orthopedics, radiology, etc. There will be some specific sessions focused on the ABEM in-training exam and the ABEM written board certification exam. In addition, we will conduct preparatory training for the ABEM oral exam by holding mock oral exams several times per year.

Emergency Medical Services

Describe EMS Experience:

Our residents will have a didactic and interactive series on EMS base station and prehospital care. Our residents will be required to participate in a ground-based EMS experience and will have the option to participate in an aeromedical experience. In addition, our residents will help to teach local EMS providers and participate in disaster planning and drills.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Describe unique research resources available to the residency:

The residents will have access to the SIU School of Medicine Faculty who have been researching innovative teaching techniques for over 30 years. Additional areas of focus include rural emergency medicine and ED quality outcomes. The residents will have access to the extensive medical library at SIU SOM.

Three areas of department research interest: Emergency Medicine Education, Health

Policy, and Emergency Department Quality Outcomes

Number of peer-reviewed abstracts presented last 5 years: 28

Number of peer-reviewed manuscripts published over the last 5 years: 20

Number of non peer-reviewed publications over the last 5 years: 9

Describe how the residents meet the requirement to engage in scholarly activity:

Each resident will plan, participate and complete one research project during their residency with the goal of abstract submission to a regional and/or national meeting.

The project will be done with a sponsoring core faculty. The project may include clinical, educational or translational research. Active faculty involvement in the project is expected. The topic will be chosen to allow completion during the resident’s tenure.

The project will be identified in the first year with a specific goal of abstract submission at the end of the second year or beginning of the third year.

The following topics will be covered in the core resident conferences: 1) basic statistics,

2) research design, 3) research methodologies, 4) interpretation of study results, 5) how to deliver a presentation, and 6) abstract writing.
