Glencoe, McGraw-Hill Companies, 2007. Course Description: The fifth grade health course is a one nine-week class that meets three times a week in a six day rotation for 43 minutes per day. This course includes units consisting of prevention of diseases and proper nutrition. Course Goals: 1. To help students to identify and properly deal with combating various types of diseases. 2. For students to be able to comprehend their nutritional needs, follow a healthful eating plan, make healthful food choices, and manage one’s weight. 3. To incorporate PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) standards into the health curriculum to further enhance district wide assessment scores of students. Articles will be assigned by the instructor. I will either give you an article relating to the chapter we are covering or assign one during class from the newspaper, internet or a magazine. The students are required to complete the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. Read the article. Write a 7 to 12 PSSA informational sentence summary of the article. (20 pts.) Properly title the article using your name, my name and the class period. (5 pts.) Write a PSSA based 3-6 sentence persuasive reaction to the article. What is your opinion? (10 pts.) 5. Attach the article to his written work, use a stapler! (5 pts.) 6. Present article and written work to instructor in a neat manner. (10 pts.) The PSSA based article should be two paragraphs in length. Project: Each student will be assigned one type of disease relating to the human body. He must research that type of disease and provide a PSSA based six paragraph informational written report. This presentation will cover treatments, affected body systems, causes, and symptoms. (Handouts and visual aids are encouraged). Late work: If a student misses a day of class, he is required to obtain and complete the work that was assigned for the missed day/s. If the student misses one day, he has one day to complete the work, two days missed, two days to complete the work, etc. (this policy includes weekends) After the ‘free’ days are over, a 50% deduction will be carried out per day until a zero is reached. Instructor’s Suggestions: This class is designed for students to experience varying aspects of the health realm and further improve PSSA personal performances. The instructor’s exams are designed to facilitate student’s ability to think critically/apply knowledge. Also, the classroom environment is developed to encourage student interaction . . . . so students, if something that relates to health is on your mind, please ask the question or share your views!
