Course Description: This course is designed for students majoring in engineering. Topics include: data analysis, probability, random variables, discrete and continuous probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, linear regression, and statistical process control. Course Objectives: 1. To acquaint the students with the fundamental concepts of probability and statistics. 2. To develop an understanding of the role of statistics in engineering. 3. To provide an understanding of the processes by which real-life statistical problems are analyzed. 4. To familiarize students with computer-based statistical analysis through the SPSS software package. 1 Homework: Homework problems will be assigned each week and are due in lecture the following week. Points will be deducted for homework turned in late and homework not turned in will receive a score of "zero". All work (computer and manual) should be shown for each problem so that partial credit may be given. Homework may be done in groups of up to three people. If you choose to work in a group please submit one homework solution paper(s) with the names of all group members on that one solution. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given each week during the recitation. If you miss a quiz, you will be given a score of 0. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Exams: Three exams are scheduled throughout the course. If you must miss an exam, please make alternative arrangements with the instructor before the exam is given. Make-up exams will only be given for absences due to unavoidable situations Cheating of any form on quizzes or exams will result in a grade of 0 for that quiz or exam!
