Welcome and thank you to all the above for nominating and offering their services to help manage the club for the next 12 months. Special thanks go to: Bob Paice for his time and services as handicapper for the last 2 years; Bob Harris for his marathon effort as the Treasurer of the club for the last 14 years; Chris Spencer for his contributions on the committee over the last few years; Since the AGM, Gay Mitchell has resigned as Treasurer and from the committee. A special thank you to Gay for her dedication and contributions whilst serving on the committee. Especially her efforts in setting up the Junior and ladies golf clinics. Bob Harris is again helping the Club out as Acting Treasurer. Golf Shop Update. The shop has been up and running for several months now, and the range of merchandise and accessories is slowly building. Competition entries are now taken through the area near the shop, and members are asked to fill out their own cards. All food is now being sold out of the shop, with members serving themselves and paying at the bar. The shop needs your support, which can be given by either purchasing food/drinks/merchandise, or from volunteering to go onto the Saturday Roster to serve as “shopkeeper”. Inaugural Members Survey 2014 Of the 197 surveys sent out to the members, we had 65 returned. Thank you to those that completed the survey, as your responses provided the committee with some concrete ideas of which direction you wanted your Club to go. A Master Copy (showing collated responses) is pinned to the notice board in the clubrooms, but individual copies can be obtained on request by contacting Peter Dolinski. Broadford Golf Club Inc. Thank you to Don & Anne Hackett, Rod Gale, Chris & Cherie Spencer, Peter Dolinski for their donations to the draw. Updating of Email Addresses We would appreciate if all members allowed the club to forward information and communication to them via email, a much faster and less expensive way of keeping in touch with our membership. If you have recently changed your email address, please let the Club know. Please see Leanne Paice or Don Hackett to update your records, and do your bit to help reduce the amount of money the Club needs to spend on postage. Peter Coleman Memorial - Paved area completion Engraved pavers have been laid near the office as a memorial to Peter Coleman, and the memorial was officially opened by members of the Coleman family, immediately after the AGM. The local newspaper reporter was there, but unfortunately this story did not make the newspaper as anticipated. Thank you to everyone that purchased pavers, and a special thanks to all those members that helped with selling the inscribed pavers, site preparation work, and laying of pavers. If anyone missed out and would now like to purchase a paver, please see Joe Mirabella. Course Improvements and updates Landscaping is being conducted with the introduction of garden beds and plants. A backhoe has been made available for club use, thanks to Joe Mirabella, and over the coming weeks the piles of fill around the course will be moved to where it is most needed. Work is being done on the men’s 8th tee to level the ground and increase the playable area. Greenkeeper Brendan and his volunteer crew can be proud of the standard of the course at present, as it is in pristine condition, with limited litter under trees, paths being attended to, and mulch being spread where it is needed. The clubhouse has had a lick of paint, and is gradually becoming de-cluttered, and therefore more welcoming. Thanks go to the volunteer members that continue to do a great job around the club/course. Every member of the Club COULD help, and become more involved. If you can assist the club in any way, or have hidden talents, ideas or time, please approach a committee person. Tree Planting Day Thanks to Tom Fenton for organising the Tree Planting Day, which will take place on Sunday 19th July 2015, when it is expected that around 300 trees and other plants will be planted. These were sourced at no cost to the club, and pegs have already been placed around the course to indicate the planting sites. Broadford Golf Club Inc. Horwood Road, Broadford (03) 5784 1092 All correspondence to: P.O Box 22 Broadford Victoria 3658 e-mail: broadfordgolfclub@bigpond.com Tree planting, cont….. Volunteers are required to help in this task, so please contact Tom so that he can allocated the various tasks to all volunteers. If you surprise him by just turning up at 9.00 am on the day, your services will still be greatly appreciated. A BBQ lunch will be supplied for the volunteers on the day. Broadford Golf Club Major Raffle “ SPECIAL EFFORT.” Fundraising activities are always ongoing due to the high costs involved in running the club and the course. Please sell these to your friends/work mates/relatives, and return the stubs and money to the Club as soon as possible. If you think you can sell more tickets, please see Peter Dolinski. Bendigo Bank Grant The club applied for $15,000 grant, and gratefully received $7,500, which will allow for the purchase of a golf cart, and an upgrade of the security system inside the clubhouse. Members are strongly encouraged to support the Bendigo Bank by doing their bank with them. Bendigo Bank has assisted this club, and many other like organisations, with some very generous grants, and the more that bank with Bendigo, the more than will become available for community support in the future. Leanne has application forms. Security Upgrades to the clubhouse The committee is looking at the upgrades to better secure the premises and protect our assets. A system with security cameras and other safeguards will be introduced shortly. If any members have special knowledge of the business of home security systems, or have contacts in that area, please see a committee member. Broadford Golf Club Inc. Horwood Road, Broadford (03) 5784 1092 All correspondence to: P.O Box 22 Broadford Victoria 3658 e-mail: broadfordgolfclub@bigpond.com Bequeathed Golf Buggy We give a special thank you to Mrs O’Rourke, who donated a golf buggy to the club. ]. Unfortunately this buggy was in need of some major repairs, so the cart was traded and the club received $500. Meanwhile, the committee has recently purchased 2 petrol golf carts for $6,500, and will take delivery of them Wednesday 8th July 2015. The cart shed will be modified and made bigger to accommodate these carts. Thank you to Ken Manson for his time and efforts in organising the sale of these carts, as well as assessing/reporting on the bequeathed cart. Sponsors for Saturday events welcomed We would encourage members and their families to consider sponsoring a Saturday Competition day. You could use this opportunity to promote your business, or just for the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping with the fundraising efforts of the club. The cost of a competition is around $75 to $100, so if three members were to pool to sponsor a day, they would pay only $25 each. The club will supply the awards (the cost of which your sponsorship will cover), or you as an individual or group can supply the awards/prizes yourself. IF we could have each Saturday sponsored in this way, the Club would save around $4500 each year – almost enough to buy another golf cart! Scrap Metal Another fundraiser that might be of assistance to you. We are calling for all scrap metal, and bringing it to the club will be much cheaper than taking it to the tip! Bring all your scrap metal, car batteries etc to the area assigned near the machinery shed. The club gains by selling this material. Contact Peter Dolinski or Alex Reid. However, NO RUBBISH, please!! Expressions of interest are sought for Office Administrator Position Bob Harris will be retiring as the Business Manager of the club in mid-August 2015, and will be taking leave from Friday 10th July 2015. The current position will change to that of an “Office Administrator” working 20 hours per week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The role and duties are still being reviewed, and should be finalised shortly. Anyone who is interested in this position, please contact Leanne Paice or Peter Dolinski. Cost recovery of tea and coffee Free coffee and tea for members has been reinstated after member dissatisfaction. As a compromise, the committee has introduced a donation box at the bar counter, aimed at seeking some tips and loose change from members and non-members alike. Currently donations will be targeted for path upgrades, but this aim will change from time to time. Broadford Golf Club Inc. Horwood Road, Broadford (03) 5784 1092 All correspondence to: P.O Box 22 Broadford Victoria 3658 e-mail: broadfordgolfclub@bigpond.com The Constitution The Club Constitution is presently being reviewed and modified to come under the new legal requirements. This is a huge task and as soon as it reaches its final draft, will be presented at a Special Extra-Ordinary Meeting, to allow members to pass the changes that are necessary. Our current constitution has been over-ridden by various legislative changes, which is why we need to make the required changes. A huge thanks go to Eric Andersen, and Chris Spencer, for their part in dealing with this mammoth exercise. Welcome to New Members. Since the last newsletter, the following new members have joined us: Ashley Gurney; Matthew Devlin; Jason Bastin; Ian Carboon; Ethan McDonald; Stuart Nicholls; Robert Mortlock. Happy Golfing! Broadford Golf Club Inc. Horwood Road, Broadford (03) 5784 1092 All correspondence to: P.O Box 22 Broadford Victoria 3658 e-mail: broadfordgolfclub@bigpond.com PITCH MARK REPAIRS At this time of year grass growth has slowed down considerably, and as a result pitch marks take longer to repair. But we can all help to maintain the quality of our playing surfaces with just a little effort and care. In addition to the obvious benefits of maintaining a truer putting surface for yourself and fellow members, there are some longer term benefits for us all to repair at least our own pitch marks. The disruption to the surface caused by an unrepaired pitch mark only gets worse the next day, as mowing then scalps the lifted turf and causes the scarring to double in size. A properly repaired pitch mark will heal within 7-14 days, whereas incorrectly repaired pitch marks can take double the time. Each pitch mark represents an ideal seed bed for the one of our greatest management challenges – weeds! Each pitch mark also represents an area of wounded turf, which are ideal sites for fungal disease infection. Weeds and fungus each require the use of costly ($$$) treatments, and all members should be trying to keep these costs down, by doing the right thing and repairing any damage as they go. How to repair a pitch mark: Discard any loose turf taken out by the ball Insert the pitch mark repair tool just outside the back of the pitch mark Lever the turf (not the soil) towards the centre of the pitch mark Repeat this action on all sides of the pitch mark Tamp the repaired mark gently with your putter What NOT to do: Do not replace any pieces of turf taken out by the ball - they will die anyway and only delay the healing process Do not lift the soil from the centre of the pitch mark - this will create a larger area for grass to grow over, and further delay the healing process Do not insert the pitch mark repair tool and twist - it will only break away more turf and delay the healing process. So please invest a little bit of your money on a pitch mark repair tool from the Pro Shop, and a little bit of your time repairing at least your own pitch marks correctly. This will make an enormous difference to the course, and reduce the frustration for you and your fellow golfers as they try to sink that winning putt through a maze of unrepaired pitch marks.
