With the Feast of St. Joseph, Patron Saint of Carpenters, being celebrated on

Monday, March 19, it is only fitting that we honor as our All Stars for this week a team of men who we consider our construction crew, namely, Jack Finnegan, Vincent Hollister, and

Jack Tolchin.

Jerry McGuckin, maintenance engineer of St. Anselm Parish, states, “In the 7 ½ years that I have been here all of the projects with which these gentlemen have assisted me would be too numerous to enumerate but several notable ones are:

 setting up and taking down the annual carnival,

 putting in new lighting in the school’s classrooms,

 painting of church and cry room

 installing the ceiling in the foyer of the church.”

The first of our trio, Jack Finnegan and his wife, Marlene, have been members of St.

Anselm Parish for 37 years. Prior to moving here, they dwelt in St. Stephen Parish, where they were wed and raised their family of 3 sons. They have 5 grandchildren on whom they dote.

Jack served in the First Calvary Army Division as a photographer during the Korean

War. One of the many shots he recalls is the aftermath of a typhoon that literally flipped the ship Toyamuru over causing the death of 1100 passengers, 35 being members of his division.

Once home, he worked for the Post Office for 35 years. Today, he is retired and uses his talents in service of our parish. Besides his construction ability, he is apt at dealing cards which he does for the carnival and Monte Carlo. In addition, Jack is a Eucharistic Minister.

Jack wants to thank Father Dunleavy for the confidence that he has had in him and the never ending appreciation that Father extends for each and every little thing that is done.

He also feels that the tasks that Jerry McGuckin performs make him one of the best additions this parish has ever had,

Our next member is Vincent who was raised in St. William Parish in Lawndale.

Following his marriage there, Vince and his wife, Elaine, began wedded bliss in St. Anselm

Parish. Their 3 children, Vincent III, Regina, and Andrew, were raised and educated here.

To extend their education throughout the summer, Vince and Elaine enjoyed sharing with their offspring the many historical sites along the East Coast of the United States.

Volunteering is not new to Vince; he has been active in Scouting for 33 years (Troop

830). Now that he is retired, he has more time to dedicate to parish activities and looks forward to the next task that needs to be accomplished. If this were not enough, Vince is busy at home tracing his family’s genealogy.

Father Dunleavy’s personable manner has greatly impressed Vince. He feels Father has a wonderful gift of making people feel comfortable, enabling them to discuss their feelings with him.

Last but not least, Jack Tolchin has been in residence in St. Anselm Parish from its onset. He and his wife, Connie, moved into the area shortly after their marriage. Their children, Michael and Christine, were graduates of St. Anselm School and Archbishop

Ryan. Jack remembers fondly working security at the carnival the year that Sally Starr was the main attraction. His duty was to keep the children, even his own, from getting too close to her and knocking her down.

Jack shares that in his 50 years here that he has had the good fortune to meet all the pastoral staff, but two touched him personally. The first being Father Murray who guided him on his journey to Catholicism and instilled in him the realization that he was now a part of the parish family and closer to God. The other was Father Dunleavy who accompanied Jack and his family every step of the way as Joseph, their grandson, valiantly fought to overcome cancer. Father’s compassion, love, and support have assisted him in the healing process.

St. Anselm Parish is very fortunate to have these gentlemen willing to share their various talents. They are truly an inspiration for us to imitate since many hands make light the work.

Glorious St. Joseph, watch over these men and guide them as they do God’s work!
