Course objectives
This course will examine the linguistic, social and political impact of the spread of
English around the world. Through readings and discussions we will critically
consider the role and development of English in various contexts in the Middle East:
Daily life, education, media, advertisements...etc. Some of the questions we will
address include: At what age do people start studying English? How is English
taught? Is English confined to the elite? What model of English is promoted? Is
English influencing local languages? Is there a public debate about the impact of
English on the local culture and values? Literacy, economy, and on the country's
future?.
Course requirements
1) A research paper due on the first of November
2) Presentations starting from the first of November
