Anticipatory Set/Warm Up Activity:
Directions:
The instructor will explain the purpose of the lesson to the group. This lesson is titled “It’s Not Magic,
Just Good Common Cent$. We have been learning about choosing careers. Today we will explore careers, salaries, (how much money people make) and our own career interests. Finding a career is not
“magic”. It takes a lot of work, thought and education. Let’s see what we know about some of our interests and what we already know about careers.
In this warm up activity, students will complete an interest inventory. After completing the inventory an oral survey will be taken by the instructor in regard to their interests.
To make this activity even more interesting, the parents will take a short interest inventory.
Students and parents will play the game Riddle “Kid” dle”. The instructor will divide the group into four groups. Each group will pick two riddles from a box. They will stand and read the chosen riddle that has to do with a career. The instructor will keep track of the score on the chalkboard. (See Instructor Resource for further instructions.)
Timeline: 30 minutes
Presentations by guest speakers and discussion
Directions:
Prior to this event, the instructor will have contacted three to five high school students, who have part time jobs. They may have these jobs throughout the school year or throughout the summer. The students should be good role models, making good grades in school and participants in some community or school extra curricular activities. Each of these students will present a short presentation and a picture of the job they are now doing and the career they want to enter. They should also tell how much they make in a salary now, and what they project they will make. Following the presentations, the instructor will guide a discussion session covering the following topics. ( For example: A girl who wants to become a chef may now be working at the local diner or fast food restaurant. A boy who wants to be a construction boss or architect may be working as a carpenter’s helper. A boy who wants to be a Physical Education teacher may be working at the local gym or YMCA.)
These would be good ideas for presenters.
Print these questions on the chalkboard before the presentation. Have student volunteers ask the questions to the presenters.
Why did you decide to apply for this job?
How did you become interested in your area of part time work
What do you do with the pay you earn from your job?
Are you able to keep up with your school work and sports activities when your work?
Is your job really preparing you for your future career?

This career guide has many job descriptions that are written in student friendly language. The parents and students should explore the careers and decide the student’s top area of career interest.

It will then tell them how much money they can expect to make yearly.
They will need assistance from their parents in accessing the site and typing in the information.
