Grade 7 Mathematics Course Overview Course Title: Grade 7 Mathematics Instructor: Mr. Knight Contact information: Woodrow Wilson Middle School phone 347-8594 Ext. 3202 Email knightm@mps1.org Description: The 7th grade mathematics course of study includes integers, solving one-step equations, exponents, operations with fractions, patterns and rules, graphing in the coordinate plane, ratios and proportions, percents, geometry, circumference and area, volume, probability, and statistics. Learner Outcomes: Use integers to solve problems Solve one-step equations Use algebraic skills to describe real-world situations numerically, symbolically, and graphically Use fractions to solve problems Graph points in the coordinate plane Solve problems with proportions and percents Classify geometric shapes Find circumference, area, and volume Collect, organize, display, and analyze data In addition, the 7th grade advanced level mathematics course of study includes: Solving two-step equations Writing equations Solving equations containing fractions Graphing functions Identifying and drawing 3-dimensional figures Exploring strategies for solving logic puzzles Drawing scatter plots Activities: Daily homework assignments based on concepts learned in class Notebook, neatly kept, including table of contents, class notes, sample problems, completed homework assignments, and all class work to be submitted and graded for accuracy and completeness with each unit test. Various class activities, including individual and group work, internet research, and long-term projects. Performance tasks requiring you to solve mathematical problems in situations similar to reallife Grading: You will receive a letter grade at the end of each quarter. The grade will reflect your performance in these areas: Tests 40% Homework 30% Notebook 20% Preparation 10% Course procedures: You can expect me to treat you courteously and respectfully, be available for extra help, be well-prepared for class, hold high expectations for you, return your work in a timely manner, be ready to begin class promptly, and show a sense of humor. You will, of course, be given additional time to complete your homework assignment—one extra day for each day absent. If you are absent on the day of a test, you will take the test on the day you return. Remember, saying “I wasn’t here” is not an excuse. Extra help: Extra help is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Please make an appointment a day in advance if you want extra help.
