Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Specialist, Geologic Mapping, is responsible for managing a geologic mapping program in the state of Nevada as related to the evaluation of natural resources (e.g., mineral, geothermal, oil-gas) and hazards (e.g., earthquakes, floods, and landslides). The position will allow the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) to better fulfill its core mission of producing geologic databases necessary for resource and hazard assessments. Incumbent is responsible for partial supervision of the Cartography/Geographic Information System (GIS) staff within NBMG. Additional duties include project management of grants and contracts, as well as identifying ideas for new proposals and assisting in writing new proposals for funding. The position reports to the Director of NBMG. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 35% - Geologic Mapping Program Development and Management Conduct geologic mapping of bedrock and/or Quaternary deposits in Nevada at quadrangle scale (primarily 1:24,000) Compile existing geologic maps Develop digital geodatabases of geologic mapping for public distribution Develop and manage geologic mapping program, involving writing proposals for funding and managing grants and contracts Analyze mineral deposits, geothermal systems, and/or hydrocarbon deposits using structural and/or economic geology and quadrangle-scale geologic mapping Analyze natural hazards using engineering geology, environmental geology, quaternary geology and/or geomorphology and neotectonics, as well as quadrangle-scale geologic mapping 30% - Natural Resources and/or Hazards Assessments Conduct assessments of natural resources, such as mineral, geothermal, and oil-gas deposits and/or geologic hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides Compile databases for natural resources and/or geologic hazards Develop digital geodatabases of natural resources and/or geologic hazards for public distribution Develop and manage program for evaluating natural resources and/or geologic hazards, involving writing proposals for funding and managing grants and contracts 20% - NBMG Cartographic/GIS Group Management Manage technological aspects of NBMG Cartographic/GIS group, including ArcGIS, 3D modeling, and integration of multiple geologic and geophysical datasets Assist in supervising work flow in NBMG Cartographic/GIS group 15% - Scholarly Activities Publish geologic maps and resource-hazard assessments through NBMG and other appropriate outlets Manage grants and contracts and write reports for granting agencies Write and publish manuscripts in peer-review journals Present research at local, regional, and national meetings and conferences Position Description – Specialist, Nevada Geologic Mapping Page 3 3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The incumbent must work independently, show creativity, and be assertive in the development, application, and evaluation of geologic mapping, as well as natural resource and/or geologic hazard assessments. Limited direction is provided to the incumbent by the supervisor to establish and maintain project needs, goals, and methods. Incumbent interacts extensively with outside agencies and industries and makes decisions with relation to scope of work and completion of projects. Impact: The impact of the work completed by the position on the department, college, and University is extensive and visible, as the position provides critical resources for conducting new geologic mapping in the State and sophisticated analyses of natural resources and/or geologic hazards. New geologic mapping and resource-hazard assessments are important for economic development and diversification in the State, as well as for public safety. Thus, the position helps NBMG, the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, the College of Science, and the University fulfill important components of its core missions. If the work is not done timely and accurately, there could be negative impacts on the reputation of the various units the state’s economic development. 4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
