Dear ParentsThe second semester of 6th grade Science is well under way!!! We are currently studying geology and we will study life science for the 4th marking period. We have lots of good stuff coming up. Speaking of good stuff, I have assigned a volcano project. (see guidelines below) Your child has a choice between constructing a specific type of volcano or putting together a travel/informational brochure about a volcano. Students may NOT use a store bought volcano kit!!!! This will count as a test grade on the 4th marking period. I have reserved the library Tuesday 4/1 and Wednesday 4/2 for them to have class time for research/word processing/ect. They will have access to a printer. Any work they complete before our library days may be brought in on a thumb drive so it can be printed. If they need any additional computer time, they may attend homework club after school. This project is due for class D and H on Thursday 4/10 and for classes A, E and G on Friday 4/11. It may be turned in early for extra credit. Please encourage your child to be creative and not to wait until the last minute!!!! Email me with any questions. jdodd@collsk12.org Please read this packet, discuss with your child what he or she wants to complete and sign the last page. Thanks so much- Volcano ProjectYou may choose one of the following to complete for your volcano project Option 1- Create a 3-D model of your assigned volcano Using household items, (cereal, candy, wood, play-doh, modeling clay, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, yarn, newspaper, pipe cleaners, styrofoam, flour, salt, sugar cubes, paint, cardboard, fabric, etc…) make a 3-dimensional model of a volcano that meets the criteria listed below: (Note: you may NOT use a purchased volcano model) Find out what type of volcano your assigned volcano is: composite, cinder cone, shield volcano or lava dome. Include this label somewhere on your model. Include the following information on an index card somewhere on your model: Name of volcano Country where it’s found Name of continent and plate where volcano is located Date of last eruption Longitude Latitude elevation any significant eruption(s) at least 3 ‘fun facts’ map Your volcano may or may not erupt….it can be a dormant volcano, simulate an eruption or have an actual eruption using baking soda and vinegar only (to demonstrate to class on due date…..no dry ice!!!) Google…volcano world….then click on building volcano models under fun stuff for some tips on building volcano models. Option 2 Create a Volcano Brochure (travel or informational) Create a brochure including the following information about your assigned volcano: · Name of volcano Location Continent and plate Country Latitude and Longitude Eruption history Type of volcano – cinder cone, shield, composite, lava dome Interesting facts Drawing or picture of volcano · Map showing the location · Must be printed out and folded like a brochure on due date You may make your brochure informational or you may make a travel brochure. If you make a ‘travel’ brochure….be sure you are trying to persuade someone to visit!!! I suggest using Microsoft Publisher. Keep the above information but return the bottom portion to Mrs. Karetny My child has chosen (circle one) Option 1 Option 2 I understand that this project is due on March 8. I also understand that my child may not use a purchased volcano kit. I also understand that my child’s failure to complete this project will make a negative impact on his or her grade. _____________________________________________________ _________________________ Parent signature date ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________ Student signature date
