Rhetorical principles (unity, coherence, emphasis, variety) Unity (consistency): Make sure that every sentence relates to the central thought. Coherence (logic): Make your statements flow smoothly, clearly, and logically from sentence to sentence through transitional terms or from a general idea to specific points or examples. Emphasis (power): Lay emphasis on points with the help of modifiers, anastrophe (inversion), introductory “it”, repetition, quotes, etc. Variety (fun): Add variety by means of coordination / subordination, active / passive voice, short / long sentences, simple / complicated sentences, omission, synonyms(avoid repetition), etc.
