JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE:
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Renal Unit
RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Provision of specialist professional advice,
leadership and education to RTU/RDU/Acute
Unit/PD/RTOP nursing staff and nursing
staff of units holding outlying renal patients.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for rendering specialist professional advice, leadership
and education to the nursing staff of Renal Unit and other Fahad units holding
outlying Renal patients. The CNS will ensure that high standards of nursing care, in
accordance with the policies and procedures of this hospital, are applied to all Renal
patients of AFHSR thus ensuring patient safety. This will be in keeping with the
accepted principles of professional nursing practice.
This job description should be read in conjunction with NUR/PRAC/J004 –
Registered Nurse Job Description.
2.0
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
2.1
Ensure safe delivery of patient care that is personal, compassionate and
consistent with local and international patient care standards.
2.2
Participates in the orientation programme of new staff to the unit.
2.3
Contributes to the attainment of competencies for new staff and Nursing
students.
2.4
Takes a leading role in the unit teaching programme for all Renal staff.
2.5
Responsible for bedside clinical education of all Renal staff.
2.6
In conjunction with the Head Nurse/Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for
the supervision of Renal Unit staff undertaking unfamiliar procedures or
working with new equipment for the first time.
2.7
Participates in the development and evaluation of patient care standards within
the CNS sphere of activity.

Responsible for the supervision of renal nursing practice on wards holding
outlying renal patients.
2.9
Implements research based practice/ideas in order to strive to continually
improve quality of patient care.
2.10
Through audit, assists in the monitoring of standards of care delivered by
members of the renal nursing staff.
2.11
Develops policies/procedures related to renal care in conjunction with other
members of the multi-disciplinary team.
2.12
Liaises with other members of the multi-disciplinary team relating to the
education of both inpatients and outpatients and their relatives where
appropriate and relevant.
2.13
Ensures that information regarding renal patients is regarded as and kept
confidential, secure and out of reach of unauthorized persons.
2.14
Undertakes own continuous learning/professional development through
research in pursuit of excellence within the field of Nephrology nursing.
2.15
Collaborates with the Clinical Director, Head of Nursing Education and Head
Nurse in order to ensure on-going professional development of nursing staff.
2.16
Participates in Hospital Wide Nurse Education programmes as required.
2.17
Acts in the capacity of Senior Nurse after hours supervisor as designated by
the Nurse Manager and in agreement with the Head of Nursing Education.
HOURS OF WORK:
3.1
Standard 48 working hours per week.
3.2
It is expected that 60% of total hours worked will be devoted to the clinically
based role and the other 40% will be devoted to research, training preparation
and administration.

Registered General Nurse in country of origin with a minimum of 5
years post registration experience, 3 years of which should be in a
Renal Transplant/Dialysis Unit.
Evidence of teaching ability. Teaching qualification desirable.
Knowledge of current nursing developments within the Nephrology
environment.
Evidence of first level nursing management experience.
Relevant knowledge of Total Quality Management processes.
Effective communication skills within the multi-disciplinary team.
Confident, supportive leadership style.
Works autonomously and unsupervised.
Demonstrates motivation, initiative, leadership and flexible
management skills.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
5.1
As laid down by the Hospital Programme and subject for amendment.
Remuneration will be commensurate with the category and grade as a Clinical
Nurse Specialist (CNS).
