FOSTER
This material has been gathered from various sources, some original, some the
work of others and I cannot find as yet (April 1985) that Nathaniel Foster was
related to Nathan Foster Rogers but I include this material in hope that a bell will
ring for another descendant who will share the information.
From Ima Lee (Foster) Weaver whose manuscript was found in the vertical file of
the Ohio State Library, Genealogical Section, Columbus, Ohio.
"The first that is known of the name Foster was about the year 1065 A.D.
when Sir Richard Forrester went from Normandy, over to England, accompanied
by his brother-in-law, William the Conqueror and participated in the victorious
Battle of Hastings. The father of Sir Richard was Baldwin IV, called the forrester 'le
Debonaire', whose wife was Adela, daughter of Robert, King of France.
"The name was first Forrester, then Forester, then Foster. It signified one
who had care of wild lands; one who loved the forest; a characteristic trait which
has marked the bearers of the name through all the centuries that have followed.
The Fosters seem to have located in northern countries of England and in the
early centuries of English history participated in many a sturdy encounter with their
Scottish foes.
"Reginal Foster came from Devonshire, England to Massachusetts in 1638
with his wife Judith. His sons were Reginald, William, Isaac and Jacob.
"According to the Foster genealogy, the son Reginald II married Elizabeth
Dane, daughter of John Dane and [she] died 28 Dec 1707. His son Nathaniel who
was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts 19 Sept 1678, married Joanna Marshall 19
Apr 1704. They had a son Nathaniel II born in Ipswich who was a shipwright. This
Nathaniel married Mary Low, daughter of Thorndike Low and had a son Nathaniel
III who was baptized 19 Mar 1731-2 and who was also a shipwright.
"The father of my Revolutionary ancestor Nathaniel Foster was also named
Nathaniel Foster. He married Mary Eldredge of Cape May, New Jersey on 19 mar
1754 (p 141 New Jersey Marriage records).
"Because of the repeated occurance of the name Nathaniel and because
Nathaniel III baptized in 1732 would have been 22 years old and of marriageable
age in 1754, I believe Nathaniel III to be the father of my Revolutionary ancestor
who would be Nathaniel IV".

He was made freeman in Massachusetts 17 Apr 1637 and the same year was at
lynn, Mass where according to Lewis's history of Lynn, 60 A of land was alloted to
him. He moved to Southhampton NY in 1651 and died 1687. Children:

Nathan Foster son of Joseph born Southampton 1683/4; moved to Newark, NJ
Lions Farms, where he married 1706-10 Mary, daughter of Joseph Lyon and is
named in his fil will 13 Feb 1726/7. He died 18 Feb 1737, age 54. weaver or
clothier
25 Feb 1737/8 his widow renounced her administration for their son Joseph.
Joseph's will names mother Mary Foster, Father Nathan foster, deceased and four
sisters Abigail Harrison, Mary, sarah and Damaris Foster. Brother Job Foster.

Job b. Newark 1705-35; some say he was the Job Foster who died 18 Jan 1795 age 60
tombstone Newark therefore born 1735. It is possible that Job was born ca 1710
and was the father of Job born 1733, dying when the latter was a boy.

soldier.
9 Feb 1760: born in Morris County, New Jersey.
ca1 Aug 1776: when only 16 years old volunteered in the militia from his residence in
Hunterdon New Jersey and was stationed at Perth Amboy, engaged in fortifying
the town.
fall of 1776: he went to Bucks County, Pennsylvania just across the Delaware River.
1777: enlisted as a substitute for Ezekiel Rogers, drafted militiaman in Bucks County,
Pennsylvania His company marched up the Brandywine but was ordered to retreat
and returned home on the day of famous Battle of Brandywine.
1780: he moved to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and m/1 Polly (or
Peggy) Watson in Virginia (DAR lineage v107 p253 #106822).
Apr 1781: Entered service from Hampshire County, Virginia as a substitute for Aaron
Caldwell but upon reaching Richmond he got a rifle and joined Capt Stump's Rifle
company. In the spring he was engaged in scouting and watching the movements
of the enemy near Richmond. After a respite of nine days following this last tour,
he entered again as a substitute for David Newman a drafted militia man in
Hampshire County, Virginia. He served a total of nine months in the Revolution
and knew Washington and Lafayette by sight.

1784: son Isaac born in Virginia (he was age 66 years in the 1850 census) married Nancy
Smith 25 Feb 1806 in Adams County, Ohio (Marriage Bk 1 p41) by Joseph Moore.
He served in the war of 1812 as an Ensign and a Second Lieutenant in the Ohio
Militia and in 1813 marched from West Union to Lower Sandusky where he
received an honorable discharge. In 1814 he served three months, marching into
Canada and for this service he received 80A.
He lived in Adams County, Ohio on what is known as the old Foster
homestead on Island Creek near Manchester. Here he established a flour mill
which he and his family operated for two generations. His children were Abraham,

Samuel, Nathaniel, William, Elizabeth who married a McNeary, Sara who married
a Moore, Esther who married a Conn? and Mary who married a Nixon. Isaac may
have married for a second time Sarah _______.
Feb 1810: son Nathaniel Jr married Martha Hayslip daughter of Richard Hapslip 28 Mar
1822 in Adams County, Ohio. He died 5 Nov 1876 aged 66y 9m and is buried in
the old Manchester cemetery, Sprigg Twp Adams County, Ohio - he had a son
Jorden L. born 1 Dec 1824 Greene Twp. Adams County, Ohio and lived

Nathaniel Foster was an early member and deacon.
22 Feb 1802: married second in Adams County, Ohio Esther (Cleveland) Downs of
Windham, Connecticut, widow of Henry Smith (1760-1802) and daughter of
Moses Cleveland. She died 2 Mar 1844 aged 79 years. Henry Smith was a
Revolutioary soldier from Connecticut who came to the Northwest Territory in
1799 and bought 300A of land at the mouth of Beasely Fork on Brush Creek. He
died in Adams County, Ohio and is buried in a field near his home. A stone erected
by his son Oliver marks his grave.
The story is told that Henry Smith first came to the community where
Nathaniel Foster lived with his (Henry Smith's) small daughter Nancy. Later his
wife Esther came to the community on horseback in search of her daughter. She
inquired at the Foster home as to the whereabouts of a man with a small child. She
was told that such people had located nearby and Nathaniel watched until she
identified the child as her daughter. This child Nancy, later married Nathaniel's son
Isaac who was by then her step-brother.
