Essential Clinical Anatomy, 2nd ed. Baltimore, MD: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002. Kapit, W. and L. M. Elson. Anatomy Coloring Book. San Francisco, CA: Benjamin Cummings, 2002. Course Description: A course where the human body is studied from histological and gross anatomical perspectives. Laboratories require examination of human cadavers and anatomical models, microscope work, and use of computer programs. Three lectures and one 3-hour laboratory per week. Course Objectives: To provide the student with a fundamental understanding of human anatomy in preparation for its application in related fields of study. Student Evaluation: Lecture Exams (6 @ 100 points) Laboratory Exams (3 @ 100 points) 600 pt.* 300 pt. 900 pt. *Lowest exam score will be dropped and replaced with the second lowest exam score. Final grades are based on the following conventional system: A AB+ B B- 873-900 810-872 783-809 747-782 720-746 C+ C CD+ D 693-719 657-692 630-656 603-629 567-602 DE 540-566 <540 Incompletes (“I”) will only be given in consideration of circumstances associated with the inability to complete the course requirements due to illness, military hardship, or death in the immediate family. Furthermore, this assumes that the major requirements of the course have been satisfactorily completed (i.e. grade of “C” or better) at the time the “I” is sought. Class Conduct: 1. While attendance is not required for lecture, regular class attendance will facilitate a higher grade in the class. Exams are to be taken during the assigned times. Should circumstances necessitate, arrangements will be made for students to take exams at times other than those assigned at the discretion of the instructor—and only if arrangements are made in advance of the exam. 2. Notification of classes to be missed for athletics and other university events must be presented in writing prior to the class(es) to be missed. Failure to do so will result in a score of zero for the missed work (Including missed exams!). 3. All cell phones, pagers, etc. will be turned off during class!! 4. Students are expected to do the assigned readings before class. NOTE: Lecture will not follow a chapter by chapter format. The reading assignments are a minimal preparation. Because the lecture may contain material not specific to the readings (e.g., a nerve discussed in lecture may be discussed elsewhere in the text), the student is encouraged to make use of the index in the text and look up material that needs clarification. In addition, the instructor expects that the student will be prepared to discuss the clinical applications of the assigned readings –therefore, don't neglect to read the blue boxes and refer to the tables and figures in the text. 5. Cheating will not be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating will automatically be given an “E” for the final course grade. 6. The academic dishonesty policy, covering plagiarism, substituting the work of another as your own, altering records, and assisting in any of these will be handled according to the Hope College policy. 7. Students will abide by the policies pertaining to cadaver use outlined in the "Student User Safety Agreement."
