MUED 5973 TESTS AND MEASUREMENT IN MUSIC ******************************************** Semester: SPRING 04 Class: T 5:30p Instructor: Dr. Dale Misenhelter Phone: 5-5746 Office:226 Music Office Hours: M-R 10:30a - 11:30a ******************************************** This course will address the psychometric concepts of tests and measurement in music achievement, aptitude, attitude, and self-assessment. The course will focus on the teaching and assessment of musical skills, aptitude, attitude, and responses, and will critically examine existing aptitude tests (from early work by Seashore and Watkins-Farnum through contemporary evaluation theory of Gordon, etc). Basic statistical concepts, data analysis, and software used in common testing and research scenarios will be introduced. Goals 1. To stimulate thinking concerning the teaching profession and life as evidenced by demonstrating ability to logically analyze, criticize, and/or choose alternatives consistent with some value orientation. 2. ISBN 1-55798241-4 Additional Course Objectives: The student will: - read and discuss issues relating to assessment inmusic education, including measurement functions, instruments, and applications as they apply to student assessment in general music, individual performances, ensemble performance, and teacher assessment. - devise assessment procedures and instruments to assess students progress using both traditional and nontraditional points of view. - read, interpret, and evaluate research related to the evaluation of music Grading Attendance and Participation 10% Tests on assigned readings and class discussion (3 @ 20% = 60%) Analyses of published research articles (10 @ 2% = 20%) Each student will select ten different recent research articles to read and review. Complete a research review form for each article by the assigned dates. Research Paper (10%) Each student will select a topic related to testing and measurement in music for a research paper.
