Purpose of the Job and Primary Objectives.
Responsibility for all IPT’s liaison with parliament, ensuring parliamentary
participation in IPT’s programme of events, the Fellowship programme, Civil
Service Attachment Scheme. Maintain and increase IPT profile in parliament
through relationships with Parliamentarians

Main Duties
 Recruitment of parliamentarians into the Fellowship Programme, Civil Service
Attachment Scheme, Sector based Fellowships, Policy Breakfasts and other IPT
programmes, ensuring company demand is met by supply of parliamentarians
 Draft, implement and manage strategy for IPT’s parliamentary relations,
including the Fellowship programme and sector based Fellowships
 Maintain Fellowship Scheme and ensure smooth running of Fellowships
 Day-to-day liaison with parliamentarians on behalf of IPT
 Liaison with the Whips office, party leadership, select committees, APPGs,
standing committees, special advisors etc, and gaining their endorsement for the
IPT
 Main point of liaison with House staff
 Identifying, targeting and liaison with potential Fellows and participants in IPT
programmes
 Identifying and targeting parliamentary bodies, committees and gaining their
endorsement of the IPT
 Matching parliamentarians to member companies
 With Head of Membership and Director of Strategy devise programmes,
including sector based Fellowships according to parliamentary needs and ensuring
that programmes follow parliamentary interest
 Secretary to the Fellowship Committee
 Ensure accurate record, reporting and measurement of parliamentary activity on
behalf of IPT, including database.
 Manage the administration of Sector Based Fellowships
 Manage the ‘educative’ programmes for members including the ‘Introduction
to...’ series

 Part of the IPT management committee
 Sits on Fellowships Committee
 Budget responsibility for the Fellowships budget and any other sector-based
fellowships budgets.
5 Role Autonomy or Decisions Made
Often working with autonomy without senior management reference. Need to
represent, negotiate, and make decisions without recourse to senior management
assistance on behalf of IPT. May represent IPT at the very highest levels with little or
no notice.
6 Advice or Recommendations Made
Recommendations and advice made daily to senior management, Trustees, ExComm,
and to companies. Knowledge and expertise in parliament rests within this post.
7 Knowledge and Skills Required
Experience of parliamentary liaison at senior levels, working in Westminster,
experience of working with Whips, Select Committees, APPGS, standing committees
etc. Experience of representation at a very senior level. In-depth knowledge of
parliamentary process and of policy issues.
8 Impact on the Organisation
High – if not performed at the right level then very high detrimental impact on IPT.
Key relationships at this level with Trustees, CEO and Director Strategy, and
Parliamentarians.
9 Relationships with Others
High - main point of contact with parliamentarians. Key contact with member
companies embarking on a fellowship programme, including introductory, chemistry
and follow up meetings.
10 Information Handling
Responsibility for the parliamentary strategy for IPT, overall responsibility for data
on parliamentarians and their IPT experience and contacts thereof. Responsibility for
measurement of success of engagement with parliamentarians on behalf of IPT and
member companies. Responsibility for the strategic plan of parliamentary
involvement in IPT programmes
11 Communications
Daily communication with parliamentarians and companies face-to-face and in print. .
12 Working Environment
Regularly required to attend evening functions, and occasionally domestic and
international travel which may happen over weekends.
