Unit Question How can Information systems and databases help organisations turn their raw data into something that is meaningful and gives them a competitive advantage in the market place? Contents Questions What type of information do information systems and databases contain? What is data? What is information? How can we transform data into meaningful information? What type of information does the end user require? How do databases help with the organisation of information? How can we improve current systems? Unit Summary Mmmm Pizza! Information systems are computer systems that support end users, giving them access to the information they require. For a large number of information systems, the data is held in databases and access is via database management systems. The emphasis in this topic is on the processes of organising, storing and retrieving data with database systems and hypermedia. In this unit, students will complete a group project, working in teams to create a pizza phone ordering system. Syllabus Outcomes H1.2 - explains and justifies the way in which information systems relate to information processes in a specific context H2.2 - develops and explains solutions for an identified need which address all of the information processes H3.2 - demonstrates and explains ethical practice in the use of information systems, technologies and processes H5.1 - justifies the selection and use of appropriate resources and tools to effectively develop and manage projects H5.2 - assesses the ethical implications of selecting and using specific resources and tools, recommends and justifies the choices H7.2 - uses methods to thoroughly document the development of individual and team projects. Students are to write a design brief by first acquiring an understanding of the current system and current problem. Unit (Database) Mmmm Pizza! Task 7: Test, evaluate and present the system Students are to self test and evaluate the systems and finally present the system to the client. Task 6: Build database forms, onscreen and printed reports Students are to build the inputs and outputs of the Pizza House phone systems. Task 2: Identify the current system and requirements by creating a visual diagram to illustrate it The Pizza House has made piping-hot pizzas at their shop for quite some time now. They currently do not have a phone ordering system, and are now considering upgrading in order to spend more quality time making gourmet pizzas. In groups of 3, you are to develop the pizza ordering system using Microsoft Access and then present your system to the client through a digital presentation. Outcomes: H1.2, H2.2, H3.2, H5.1, H5.2, H7.2 Task 3: Create a interactive (hyperlinked) diagram to present the Information Process life cycle Students are create an illustration containing hyperlinks with information on the process lifecycle that they are about to embark on within the current project. Task 4: Produce a Design Report for a solution Task 5: Implement the Pizza House phone Students are to write a design report defining their solution to the current problem. ordering system database Students are to implement the database using MS Access, to construct tables and populate fields with test data.
