Objectives The field of transplantation defies boundaries, and tremendous advances in improving the likelihood of survival for patients with organ failure have been made in the past 40 years. From molecular and cellular interactions in the immune system and the relationship of the host and graft tissues, through the science of immunosuppression and rejection, to the organs that can be offered as the only treatment for end-stage diseases of the liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, heart and small bowel, advances in one area have had a profound impact in all components of transplantation. Advances in organ donation, ethics, organ allocation and public awareness impact both those waiting for a transplant and the health care system, as resources are used to improve survival and quality-of-life for transplant recipients. The transplant team includes patients, families, nurses, technicians, health professionals, physicians, surgeons, and scientists from many different disciplines working together towards a common goal. To ensure this team has the ability to continue to move the field forward, we must commit to training transplant professionals, particularly clinician-scientists (post-MD degree), to excel in this 116107276 13/02/2016 multi-specialty, multi-organ, trans-disciplinary field, and to build the bridges that will improve the cohesiveness of research efforts towards clinical application. This Fellowship is a collaborative effort to fund a series of Post-Doctoral Fellowship Trainees to gain knowledge and perform research in Transplantation and Organ Donation, so they can become integral members of the transplant community in Canada, leading new advances in all aspects of transplantation. All Parties recognize that transplantation has a collective importance to their individual communities, and that by partnering to provide support for training clinicianscientists (post MD degree) specializing in transplantation, they can optimize the number and quality of new team members eager to contribute to achieving progress in transplantation. The primary goal of this Program is to enhance transplantation research capacity in Canada by training increased numbers of highly skilled clinician-scientists (post-MD degree) in transplantation and organ donation. The program provides support for research training for Clinician Scientist PostDoctoral Fellowships for MDs destined for a career as transplantation clinicianscientists. Applications are invited in all areas of research For this competition, applications will be accepted in all streams of research.
