(YEAR 21) FY 2014-2015

CONTEST RULES AND REGULATIONS

I. OBJECTIVES

1. To develop camaraderie among the training residents of the different training hospitals/institutions.

2. To update residents as well as clinicians in practice on the recent trends in internal medicine.

3. To develop competitiveness among the training residents and in so doing, inspire them to study harder for their future endeavors.

II. DESCRIPTION

1. An annual event consisting of nine (9) elimination rounds and culminating in a final round to be held during the PCP annual convention on the month of May.

2. All PCP accredited residency-training hospitals must participate.

3. The mechanism, rules and regulation for the medical quiz contest was formulated and continually being amended by the PCP Medical Quiz

Committee (MQC).

III. MECHANICS

1. Each participating team will be composed of maximum of four (4) official members, three of whom will sit during the contest .

Substitution is only allowed before the start of the final round.

The members should be bona fide resident-physicians of the Department of

Medicine of their respective hospitals . Contestants should be medical residents currently in training at the time of the contest and should NOT have graduated from residency at the time of the subsequent PCP annual convention.

2. Travel and transportation arrangements to be covered by sponsor shall be limited to the four (4) official members and one (1) coach.

The committee must be informed in writing of any change of the official members at least two weeks before the scheduled regional elimination round.

3. The questions will cover the following fields of internal medicine

4.3 Infectious Diseases

4.4 Gastroenterology

4.5 Nephrology

4.6 Endocrinology

4.7 Hematology

4.8 Oncology

4.9 Neurology

4.10 Rheumatology

4.11 Allergy/Immunology

4.12 Dermatology

4.13 Nuclear Medicine

4.14 Geriatric Medicine

4.15 Toxicology

4.16 Epidemiology

4.17 Biologics

4.18 Ethics

4.

The framing of the questions for the contest shall be the responsibility of the

MQC.

The official reference textbook shall be the Harrison’s Principles of

Internal Medicine, 18 th

Edition and the PCP Code of Ethics . In preparing the questions, the specific reference section including the page location will be indicated for each question.

5. Multiple-choice type questions will be prepared, the distribution of which shall be based on the categories used in the PCP Certifying Examinations.

6. The composition of the Metro Manila groupings was randomly selected.

A team will be allowed to participate if there is AT LEAST TWO

MEMBERS PRESENT AT THE START OF THE QUIZ CONTEST . A third member will be allowed to join if the team reaches the final round.

8. Hospital must inform the committee if they cannot participate.

Hospitals/institutions who do not participate will be penalized by not being allowed to participate in the quiz contest the following year unless a letter from the chairman stating a valid reason(s) for the non-appearance is submitted and approved by the committee.

9. In the elimination round, there will be 30 questions. The questions will be read aloud and repeated once. Each team will be given 5 seconds to give their corresponding answer. The correct answer will be announced and each team with a correct answer will be given a score of one. No point will be given for wrong or no answer.

10. The top 5 teams with the highest scores after the elimination round will compete in the final round.

In the event of a tie to complete the five slots, a series of “sudden death” questions will be asked until the five slots are filled up.

11. In the final round, there will be 20 questions. A correct answer will be given a score of one. A wrong answer will be given a minus one. A team, which chooses not to answer, will be given a score of zero.

Within this round, the last 5 questions will be given a score of two if the answer is correct.

A wrong answer will still be given a minus one and No answer will be given zero score.

12. In the event of a tie during the final round, 5 more one-point questions will be asked to determine the winner. The rules of the final round of right minus wrong will apply to the 5 questions. In case of a tie after the 5 th

question, there will be a “sudden death” question. All teams will be required to answer. The first team with an exclusive correct answer will be declared winner.

13. Should any team choose to contest an answer, this should be done before the next question is asked.

The Team Captain shall be the official spokesperson of the Team. The matter shall be referred to the Board of Judges whose decision shall be considered final.

14. The winners of the regional elimination will advance to the Grand Finals, which shall be held during Annual Convention of the PCP. Only the SAME members of the winning team can compete during the Grand Finals.

15. The Grand Finals will also consist of elimination and a final round. There will be nine (9) regional elimination-winning teams in this contest.

In the elimination round of the Grand Finals, 30 questions will be asked to determine the top five (5) finalists who will advance to the final round. The final round will consist of 20 questions. The same rules of the regional elimination shall apply.

16. In the event of a tie in the final round, 5 more one-point questions will be asked to determine the winner. The rules of the final round of right minus wrong will apply to the 5 questions. In case of a tie after the 5 th

question, there will be a sudden death question. All teams will be required to answer. The first team with an exclusive correct answer will be declared winner.

17. The team members and team coaches of the top five (5) winning hospitals/institutions (Champion, First to Fourth Runner-Up) of the Grand

Finals will receive individual glass trophies and a team cash award. Likewise, the Department of Medicine of the top 3 winning hospitals/institutions will also receive cash awards and glass trophies while the rest of the participating hospitals/institutions will just receive glass trophies.
