Department of Counseling and Student Development presents:
35th Annual Spring Conference
Friday, April 4, 2014
University Ballroom (2nd Floor) MLK JR Union
Brain-Based Therapy:
“The common denominator among theoretical perspectives”
John Adler, Ph.D.
John Arden, Ph.D. brings 35 years of experience providing psychological services and directing mental health programs to his
work. Since 1999 he has served as the Director of Training for Mental Health in the Northern California Region for the Kaiser
Permanente Medical Centers. In this capacity he oversees the training programs in 22 medical centers where approximately 150
people are trained annually. He is the author of 12 books, including “Rewire Your Brain”, “Brain-Based Therapy with Adults” and
“Brain-Based Therapy with Children and Adolescents” (with Lloyd Linford).
Dr. Arden also provides individual, group and family therapy and chemical dependency counseling through Kaiser Permanente. He
presents workshops on brain-based therapy internationally and in the United States. Dr. Arden has written books on anxiety (“Heal
Your Anxiety Workbook”), OCD (“Heal Your OCD Workbook” with Dr. Daniel DalCorso) and PTSD (“Conquering PostTraumatic Stress Disorder” with Dr. Victoria Beckner) Other books include “Improving Your Memory for Dummies”;
“Consciousness, Dreams”, and “Self: A Transdisciplinary Approach” (winner of the Choice 1997 Outstanding Academic Book
Award), and “Science, Theology, and Consciousness.”
Dr. Arden’s study of psychotherapy and neuropsychology inspired him to integrate neuroscience and psychotherapy, synthesizing
the biological and psychological into a new vision for psychotherapy: Brain-Based Therapy. His work incorporates current brain
research within the psychotherapy session, including neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, with psychotherapy research, mindfulness,
nutritional neuroscience and social intelligence.
More information can be found at his website: http://drjohnarden.com/
This workshop focuses on the revolution and change occurring in psychotherapy. It explains how to conceptualize psychotherapy
based on an integrative model that discards the need for the “schools of psychotherapy,” and how to talk about the brain in therapy
in order to motivate clients to try evidenced-based interventions. Attend this seminar and learn how to optimize therapy for a
variety of clients by harnessing the latest knowledge from neuroscience, developmental psychology, psychotherapy research,
evidence-based practice, attachment research, and psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches. Participants will take home
practical strategies for anxiety disorders such as OCD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder and PTSD, as well as for
Depression.
