JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:
CARETAKER (The Milburn Centre)
Responsible to:
Facilities Manager through Site Services Supervisor
(Milburn Centre)
Main Purpose:
To provide a range of premises-related services
which are required in order that West Suffolk College
offers a secure, responsive and welcoming
environment for all its customers.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are not shown in order of priority or frequency, nor is the list
comprehensive, but rather an indication of the type and level of duties expected of the post.

Unlocking of doors and premises incluing disarming alarms when required
Closing and securing of windows
Check that all portable electrical appliances are switched off and isolated
(unless otherwise instructed).
Switch off manually operated heaters and lights (othe than security lights)
Lock internal and external doors (as instructed) and activate security alarm
systems
Carry out external check to ensure building is secure, including checking
external security lights and make alternative arrangements if they are not
working.
Check that heating is functioning according to season.

Replace all light sources i.e. bulbs and tubes (where access is safe).
Remove and wash all shades, diffusers and reflectors (frequency as instructed).
Where it is not possible to remove from fitting, clean in situ.

Remove litter, leaves and excess dirt from all outside areas including steps and
paths, using outdoor vacuum/brush/rake or a combination, as appropriate.
Empty and clean litter bins and cigarette end containers.
Ensure that refuse containment areas are clean and tidy.
Distribute bins and plastic refuse sacks.
Ensure that drains and gulleys are clean and free flowing.
Make contingency arrangements to ensure safe access to buildings in periods
of severe weather conditions.
Clear snow from footpaths, according to schedule, and apply salt as and when
necessary.
Keep borders/shrubbery areas clear of litter and leaves.

Check requirement for soap, toilet rolls and paper towels and replenish as
required.

Receive goods delivered.

Move equipment and furniture within, and outside of, College complex.
Set up rooms for exams and special functions and re-instate afterwards.
Remove grids, brush around drain.

Flush with disinfectant mixture.
Clean and replace grid.

Clean glass in internal doors and partitions.
Clean both sides to ground floor windows.
Clean inside windows at all levels.
Clear gutters to ground floor buildings.
Carry out maintenance on floors by painting/sealing annually, where
appropriate.
Take down and re-hang curtains and blinds, as required.
Attend to spills, breakages, etc. and spot clean as necessary.
Shampoo carpets as required.
Check and tidy main public areas before evening classes start.
Undertake any other cleaning duties as directed by the Site Supervisor.

Carry out emergency boarding-up in the event of broken glazing.
Replace damaged door and window furniture.
Replace missing/damaged hooks and coat hangers.
Repair furniture, desks and chairs, where feasible.
Replace defective tap washers and ball valve washers.
Replace missing/damaged toilet seats/chains.
Replace missing/damaged sink chains/plugs.
Clear blocked drains, sinks and toilets.
Carry out maintenance painting to cover problem areas.
Carry out routine preparation and painting/decorating of college rooms and
corridors.
Erect shelving.
Erect wall/notice boards.
Repair leaks to sinks/basins/cisterns.
Monitor and control the use of the College car parking areas as required.

Basic plumbing, carpentry and gardening skills are
desirable, with craft skill certificates
A knowledge of education establishments.

Salary and Conditions of Service
1.
Salary up to £17,745 p.a. (dependent on qualifications and experience).
2.
Hours of work: 39 hours per week agreed with the Site Supervisor in consultation with
the Facilities Manager
3.
New appointments to the College are subject to a nine month probationary period and
will be on a Business Support Contract.
4.
Holidays – 24 days per annum pro-rata plus public holidays - rising to 29 days on
completion of five years’ service.
5.
Contributory pension with the Local Government Pension Scheme run by Suffolk
County Council.
6.
Uniforms and protective footwear are provided.
7.
As this is a regulated post (defined by the DBS) the successful applicant will be
required to complete and obtain a disclosure check from the Disclosure and Barring
Service. The cost of processing this will be £44 and will be deducted directly from your
first salary payment. Further information about the Disclosure and Barring Scheme
