2014 National Junior Show Rules
June 25-27, 2014 Springfield, IL
Eligibility:
1. All exhibitors and participants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. Exhibitors must be 21 years of age or younger as of January 1, 2014.
3. The age divisions will be as of January 1, 2014: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12)
and Novice (8 and under).
4. There will be no gilt or barrow entries accepted at the show. Entries must be submitted on-line by
June 8, 2014. Entries submitted after June 8, 2014 are subject to a $10 per head late fee.
5. Team Purebred members not exhibiting hogs will be charged a $10.00 participation fee and a $5.00
fee per contest. Payable at event sign-up.
6. If an exhibitor is not present to show their barrow/gilt, the hog cannot be exhibited without prior
approval from Coordinator.
Requirements:
1. Gilt entries must be registered Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford or
Tamworth swine farrowed December 1, 2013 and after. Barrow entries must be registered
Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford, Tamworth, Duroc, Hampshire,
Landrace, or Yorkshire swine farrowed December 1, 2013 and after. To exhibit a Duroc,
Hampshire, Landrace, or Yorkshire barrow you must exhibit a Team Purebred barrow or gilt.
Hereford and Tamworth barrows or gilts are considered Team Purebred animals. One Team
Purebred animal must be shown for each Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, or Yorkshire barrow
shown.
2. Entries may be purchased animals, but must be owned by the junior exhibitor, the exhibitor’s
family name, or exhibitor’s farm name (on or before April 30, 2014). Entries must be registered
and/or transferred prior to the show.
3. Junior exhibitors must bring their original pedigree and a copy of their pedigree to check-in. We
will check the original and return it to you; however we will keep the copy to use during the
shows. Substitutions will be allowed at the show.
4. All health rules must be followed or animals will not be allowed on the grounds. See show health
regulations. Bring your original health papers to check in with you.
5. All pens are assigned and figured at two pigs per pen. Absolutely no moving or switching of pen
cards at the show. Our penning system allows us to find participants quickly if any problems or
special needs arise throughout the week. Due to the number of entries this year, pens will be
limited and it is suggested that you bring a divider panel in order to split pens if necessary.
6. The earliest entries may arrive is Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 12 noon. All entries must arrive and be
checked in by 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 25, 2014.
7. The earliest any junior hogs will be released from the barn is Friday, June 27 following the
Sweepstakes awards —NO EXCEPTIONS. Team Purebred has the right to withdraw premiums
from any exhibitor who leaves the grounds early without prior permission. If you exhibit at
Springfield and do not attend the awards ceremony you are not eligible to win the EBY sponsored
P.L.u.S. trailer.
8. There will be designated trailer parking areas. Please look for signs posted around the barn.
Trailers parked around or near the barn may be subject to towing at the owner’s expense.

9. All exhibitors must allow their hogs to be used for the judging contest if selected by Judging
Officials or Team Purebred Board Members. Hogs double entered and exhibited in the open show
will not be used.
10. Team Purebred reserves the right to randomly collect a DNA sample on exhibited animals
(barrows and gilts) at any event where registered animals are exhibited. This sample may be used
for testing for the presence of the stress gene, parentage verification, or breed purity. This
collection will be supervised by Team Purebred or breed representatives.
11. Exhibitors agree to present all champions and reserve champions for official photographs.
12. Commercial photography and filming may be conducted at the Team Purebred National Junior
Show. You may be depicted in photographs or video recordings, and by entering the grounds
and/or competitive events associated with the Team Purebred National Junior Show you consent
to the use of any depictions in connection with advertising, news reporting, public relations,
webcasts or other broadcasts, or any other activities relating to the Team Purebred National Junior
Show, and you further release and waive all claims for compensation and any rights of review and
approval, copyright, and right of publicity with respect thereto.
13. Powdering, oiling, or any other show dressing other than water applied to hogs at Team
Purebred events will not be allowed. Show officials reserve the right to disqualify any animal
from competition not meeting the requirement. No clipping will be allowed in the barns at Team
Purebred competitions.
Changes or Special Events for Springfield in 2014:
1. There will not be barrow or gilt classification Wednesday morning June 25. The breed associations
(Breed presidents and/ or representatives) reserve the right to cancel pedigrees on animals not
meeting breed standards. All decisions of the breed associations are final.
2. ALL Berkshire barrow & gilts must be stress negative and the stress status must be on the
pedigree (HAL-1843* nm must be under the pig’s name on the pedigree). DNA samples will be
collected on all Berkshire gilt and barrow breed show champions, reserve champions and any
randomly chosen animals to determine compliance with ABA negative stress gene policy and sire
verification.
3. The Skill-a-thon Contest will be held Thursday June 26 from 9-4 in the sheep barn. Exact
locations will be announced during the exhibitor meeting at the show and throughout the day
Thursday. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to find time throughout the day to take the
skillathon. If you do not take the skillathon you cannot compete in the overall sweepstakes for
your age division.
4. Please remember that we are NOT providing shavings again this year. There will be shavings
available on the grounds for purchase.
5. Please read the Health Regulations closely. We cannot allow you to exhibit if you do not follow
the health rules. Call for details if you’re not sure of these rules
6. For senior exhibitors, the Swine Issues contest will be judged on delivery (30%), appearance and
professionalism (30%), content (40%). Time slots will be assigned prior to arrival to Springfield.
Gilt Exhibitors:
1. Gilts must be farrowed Dec. 1, 2013 and after.
2. Breed classes will be broken according to farrowing dates, with class sizes divided as equally as
possible.
3. All gilt entries must be registered Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford, or
Tamworth swine and meet all breed eligibility requirements. Call for details if you’re not sure of
these rules.
4. Gilts shown in the junior show are eligible to be exhibited in the open shows and sold as long as
they are double entered in the name of the junior exhibitor (same name for both shows). They
must be entered in the open show by the entry deadline.

5. Chester White breeding gilts are guaranteed to be stress free.
6. Berkshire breeding gilts must be stress negative and have the negative stress status denoted on the
pedigree (HAL-1843* nm).
7. All junior show gilts are guaranteed to be open. Team Purebred has the right to pregnancy check
any gilt. Any gilt found to be bred at the show, will forfeit all premium money and placing; and
will be subject to being banned from all Team Purebred events for the next two years.
Barrow Exhibitors:
1. Barrows must be farrowed Dec. 1, 2013 and after.
2. This is a non-terminal show—exhibitors are responsible for their own barrows. There will be an
opportunity to market your hogs on Thursday morning, June 26. Sign up at check-in.
3. Barrows will be shown by weight with class sizes divided as equally as possible.
4. A weigh card for each barrow must be filled out with the exhibitor’s name, barrow’s registration
number, breed and weight. This weigh card is to be turned in at the check-in area by 10:00 am,
June 25.
5. There are no weight limits, minimum or maximum. There is a 15 pound plus or minus tolerance.
The top 3 barrows will be weighed back in each class. Barrows not within the 15 pound tolerance
are will disqualified from the show.
6. Barrows will not be weighed again during champion drives.
7. All barrow entries must be registered Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford,
Tamworth, Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, or Yorkshire swine and must meet all breed eligibility
requirements. Call for details if you’re not sure of these rules.
8. To exhibit a Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, or Yorkshire barrow you must exhibit a Team Purebred
barrow or gilt. Hereford and Tamworth barrows or gilts are considered Team Purebred animals.
9. All Berkshire barrows must be stress negative and have the negative stress status denoted on the
pedigree (HAL-1843* nm).
Bred & Owned:
1. To be eligible for bred & owned classification the gilts or barrows must have been owned by the
exhibitor (junior member), and NOT in the family or a farm name that includes a partner more
than 21 years of age (this includes siblings or partnerships as long as all are under 21 years of age).
2. Exhibitor must have owned the dam at the time of breeding.
3. The exhibitor must be listed on the pedigree as BOTH the breeder and the owner of the gilt or
barrow they are exhibiting.
4. Only Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford or Tamworth swine are eligible
for bred & owned considerations.
Premiums
1. 1st $40, 2nd $35, 3rd $30, 4th $25, 5th $20, 6th $ 15, 7th $10
2. Breed Champion $500, Reserve Breed Champion $250
3. Bred & Owned Breed Champion $250, Bred & Owned reserve Breed Champion $125
4. All checks must be picked up at the show. They will not be mailed.
Showmanship Contest
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. The divisions will be as of January 1, 2014: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12) and
Novice (8 and under).
3. Divisions will be randomly broken into classes according to entries, with no more than 20
exhibitors per class.
4. Only pedigreed Berkshire, Chester White, Poland China, Spotted, Hereford and Tamworth
animals may be used in showmanship classes.

5. Gilts or barrows used for the showmanship contest are required to come from a junior exhibitor or
open show entries. It is the responsibility of the participant to make arrangements with another
junior member or open show exhibitor to use their hog.
Skillathon
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. The divisions will be as of January 1, 2014: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12) and
Novice (8 and under).
3. This is a non station-to-station skillathon. This is a test format covering various aspects of the
swine industry with some visual aids.
4. The test will take approximately 15-20 minutes.
5. The following are examples of topics that could be used in the skillathon: Ear Notching, Swine
Breeds, Meat Cut Identification, Swine Health, Pork Quality Assurance, Animal Handling
Practices, Swine Anatomy (External, Internal or Skeletal), Equipment Identification, and Pedigree
Information.
6. No parents or spectators are allowed in the skillathon area. We will have someone read the quiz
to young participants. (Youth with special needs will be allowed parental help if they talk with
the coordinator prior).
7. Once a contestant completes the skillathon, they must leave the room immediately and leave the
skillathon area to avoid any sharing of answers. REMEMBER: YOU HURT YOURSELF IF YOU
SHARE ANSWERS WITH OTHERS.
Judging Contest
Contest for Senior, Intermediate and Junior divisions – Friday, June 27 – 9:00 a.m. in the Sheep Barn
(Please be there 10 minutes early and bring a pencil and notebook)
Novice Contest – Friday, June 27 – 2:00 p.m. in the Sheep Barn (Please be there 10 minutes early and
bring a pencil)
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. The divisions will be as of January 1, 2014: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12) and
Novice (8 and under).
3. Parents are NOT allowed near the judging rings. Assistants will be available to novice or first-time
judges who may not understand how to mark their cards.
4. Novice will have their own separate contest. (see above for time) Novice exhibitors will judge
two classes with questions. A short teaching session will be held with the first class and the
officials will be given immediately after their cards are turned in. Novice participants will be able
to view the classes when answering the questions.
5. Junior exhibitors will judge four classes and answer one set of questions.
6. Intermediate exhibitors will judge four classes, give one set of reasons and answer one set of
questions.
7. Senior exhibitors will judge four classes, give two sets of reasons and answer one set of questions.
8. All vulvas and underlines will be considered sound. Please note any differences and be prepared to
talk them in oral reasons or answer questions about them.
9. Soundness is to be judged as is unless otherwise specified on contest day.
10. No talking at any time throughout the contest, except between the contestants and group leaders.
If you are caught talking one time, you will be warned. The second time you are caught talking,
your card will be taken away. The third time you are caught talking, you will be asked to leave the
contest. This rule is crucial for this contest to be fair for all contestants.

11. Ties will be broken first on reason scores, second by the number of perfect (50) scores received,
and third by placing scores.
Photo Contest
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. The divisions will be as of January 1, 2014: Senior (17-21); Intermediate (13-16); Junior (9-12) and
Novice (8 and under).
3. All photos MUST be the work of the contestant and must be taken by the contestant during the
past year.
4. Each contestant may have a maximum of two entries.
5. All photos submitted for the contest must have an agriculture theme.
6. Photos must be 5X7-inch color or black & white prints mounted on a 6X8-inch black poster
board. Place entry blank received at check-in (Team Purebred booth) on back side, upper lefthand corner. Photos must be mounted as described above BEFORE they are presented for entry.
7. No professional matting or formatting allowed.
8. No decoration or writing on frames or mats will be allowed.
9. Photo cannot be altered or image-enhanced.
10. When using a digital camera, contestant must print the photograph on photo paper.
11. The photos cannot have been presented for competition at a previous Team Purebred event.
12. All photos become property of Team Purebred. Photos cannot be taken home.
Swine Issues Contest
1. All contestants must be members of Team Purebred.
2. The Swine Issues contest is for senior members only and part of the overall sweepstakes for senior
members.
3. Swine Issues contest will be held Wednesday, June 25 9:30-12:00 noon in the sheep barn area.
Time slots will be assigned prior to arrival in Springfield.
4. Topics will be distributed to participants prior to the contest.
5. All exhibitors will be ranked 1st on down. Participants will be judged on delivery (30%),
appearance & professionalism (30%), content (40%).
Sweepstakes Contest
1. Points will be contributed from the showmanship contest, judging contest, and skillathon (and
swine issues for seniors) toward the Sweepstakes Awards.
2. For these three (or four) contests points will be awarded as follows: 1st place – 100 points; 2nd – 95;
3rd – 90; 4th – 85; 5th – 80; 6th – 75; 7th – 70; 8th – 65; 9th – 60; 10th – 55 and all other placing’s 50
points.
3. You must exhibit at least one Team Purebred hog to be eligible for Sweepstakes, however, your
placing in the gilt or barrow show will not factor into your overall Sweepstakes placing.
