Explanatory notes
1
The candidate is required to keep a logbook of a minimum of thirty problems they
have solved indicating that they have supplied evidence for all range items specified
in this unit standard.

All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice,
and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for
personal, product, and workplace health, safety and environmental matters; and the
obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments.

Definitions
Problem solving, for the purpose of this unit standard, is an approach which may
include but is not limited to – problem identification, problem analysis, idea and
solution generation, selection and planning of a possible solution, development and
testing of that solution, evaluation of the solution, and implementation of the solution.
Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or
workplace.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Solve problems in paper bag and sack converting using a problem solving approach.
Range
evidence of solving at least thirty problems is required. The additional seven
problems over and above those required for evidence requirements 1.1-1.3 may
come from any of tubing operations, bottoming operations, or the workplace.

Problems encountered when undertaking tubing operations for paper bag and
sack converting are solved in accordance with a problem solving approach and
workplace practices.

Problems encountered when undertaking bottoming operations for paper bag
and sack converting are solved in accordance with a problem solving approach
and workplace practices.

evidence of solving at least ten problems which may include but
are not limited to – slits not balanced, steps out, torn slits, cross
plates not lined up with perforations, comb out of register, print not
holding, seam glue squeeze, off-centre former plates, tubes not
parting at cutting head, paper breaking on perforation before
cutting head, paper breaks in machine, print out off centre,
unbalanced slits, creasing in the gusset, poly flap.
evidence of solving at least ten problems which may include but
are not limited to – tubes jammed in feeder, tubes chucked out of
feeder, slack edge of valve paper, bad folds, stuck valves, no wrap
around, no patch, valve gripper not gripping, insufficient glue
application, jam up at valve unit, poly cut, skewed bottom, glue
squeeze, folded flaps, cut in gusset area, skewed bottom seal, soft
rolls, valve inside sack, unopened sacks, skis not aligned with
second creaser, jam up on ‘S’ press.
Problems arising within the workplace are solved in accordance with a problem
solving approach and workplace practices.
