Act terrified and/or abused if your owner asks a stranger to hold your leash before going in the ring. Pretend you do not know your owner and absolutely adore the stranger when your owner returns for you after you've been in the ring and showing is done. (Thank You Pat Kroll) If you are running a little late, all the dogs ahead of you at the scheduled time will not show up making your breed and class first. If you are on time, every single dog will show up for their moment in the ring and there will be pictures taken after each breed. If you are showing two dogs alone, there will be no ringside crating and no grooming space within eyeshot of the ring. Likewise, there will be no one you know who is not busy at the time you need a dog held ring side. If you are showing two breeds, no matter how varied they are in breed or group, their ring times will work out to coincide whether or not they look that way on the schedule. When showing two breeds the two rings will be as far apart as possible, with the other ring preferably not visible from the first one and with its entrance on the opposite side of any aisle you can go down to get there. Ring locations are always as far as possible from where your car or grooming space is. To go along with that, whatever door you must enter the building by, your ring entrance is located as far as possible from that location. Bonus points are given for supers who put you on the second floor with at least one breed, with only one very slow elevator available, which is being held at the top by someone who is chatting with a friend as they leave for the day. Dog Rules No matter how short the ride all ring preparation done at home can be accidentally undone in a crate on the way to a show. The show ring is an excellent place to show off newly discovered phobias to such things as duct tape, mat material, funny hats, rattling bracelets, or squeaking shoes. Otter Tales A Recipe for Your Dog Thanksgiving Turkey Gobblers 1 cup ground turkey 2 cups white flour 1 cup cornmeal 1 egg 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 3/4 cup water 2 teaspoons tarragon Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a frying pan, cook ground turkey, crumble into small pieces and set aside on a paper towel. Combine flour and cornmeal in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, beat egg, oil and water, then add tarragon. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well. Fold in ground turkey and mix again. Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface and knead until thoroughly mixed together. Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thick and cut out shapes. Place on greased baking sheet and bake 15 minutes or until firm. Cool and serve. Keep any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Long-haired coat length is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Therefore, dogs that are carriers of the long-hair mutation will appear to be normal (short hair) themselves, but will likely pass on the long-hair mutation 50% of the time. Here is some history that I was able to glean from a few web sites: The Labs behind the "quirk/throwback" in Switzerland were imported some 30 years ago. The two imports became champions, one became the Bitch World Champion with two puppies (one definitely carrying the gene) from her first litter gaining the titles of Junior World Champion. A possibility is that the gene comes from the St. Johns dog, a progenitor of the modern Labrador. The drawing of the St. Johns dog portrays a shaggy dog with a long coat and the actual "Breed Points for the St. Johns or Labrador Dog", published in 1879 called for a very different coat than the one we now see as typical. Here is the quote: "COAT is moderately short but wavy, from its length being too great for absolute smoothness. It is glossy & close, admitting wet with difficulty to the skin, owing to its oiliness, but possessing no undercoat". Otter Tales Actually, one of the factors that influenced the formation of the LRC of Great Britain in 1916 was the problem of inter-bred Retrievers. Up until 1917, the KC allowed registration under the breed they most closely resembled and the 1915 Lab Crufts winner had a sire that was a purebred Flatcoat with relatives in that breed's ring. Other thoughts from the LRC, Inc. are that particular dogs and particular bitches carry the same gene perhaps linked to an interbred retriever as far back as the 1930's or farther: "It was not uncommon in the early days of the breed and after WWI to use, for example, to use the offspring of a FlatCoated Retriever x Labrador Retriever cross to refine or adjust a trait in the Labrador Retriever. Many old pedigrees note that a particular dog or bitch was "interbred". One of the well known Labradors imported into the United States in the 1930's had an interbred bitch in his pedigree 3 generations behind him. Those interbreds were probably short coated but may have carried a gene for long coat. So when two Labradors who carry the common gene are bred, it is more than likely a "long hair" throwback will result. You will not find references to "long haired or long coated Labrador Retriever" because the trait is not part of nor recognized in the breed and breeders would quickly eliminate a Labrador that would produce the trait from the gene pool." November, 2007 Page 7 Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia (TVD) Research/Funding Project The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, through Dr. Meg M. Sleeper, VMD, DACVIM-Cardiology, Petra Werner, DVM and Paula Henthorn PhD, is interested in continuing the TVD research. Currently they are collecting clinical and pedigree data and blood for DNA isolation from affected dogs, littermates, parents and grandparents. They plan to continue this research with the goal to be able to offer a DNA based test for the disease in the future. If there is enough interest in the Labrador Breed Organizations, they will perform further research as money becomes available. The estimated cost for DNA isolation, initial sample analysis, and salary support for one year would be approximately $50,000. Tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) in dogs is similar to Ebstein’s anomaly in humans. Both disorders involve congenital malformations of the tricuspid valve, which result in variable degrees of tricuspid valve regurgitation (TR). Dogs with the most severe TR or tricuspid stenosis will typically develop right-sided congestive heart failure within the first few years of life. The pathogenesis of tricuspid valve malformation is largely unknown. Many dogs are only mild to moderately affected, and are not identified until after they have become breeding animals. Labrador Retrievers, in particular, seem to be predisposed to TVD. A reliable test for identifying affected dogs, not only in Labrador Retrievers but in additional dog breeds, will allow breeders to markedly decrease the prevalence of this often devastating congenital heart defect. In order to further the research to find the TVD causing mutation they need: information and samples of either individual affected dogs or preferably as many dogs as possible (affected and unaffecteds) from families with affected members. (Affected dogs, littermates, parents and grandparents) They would like pedigree information, the clinical history, diagnosis, and blood samples (5 to 10 ml of EDTA blood) for DNA isolation. Also, cardiology evaluations on any of these related dogs. Dr. Sleeper has said that everything is confidential. Sending blood, pedigree and cardio report from affected dogs would be great and they can be stored until funding is available (no charge). Please send 5 mls in a purple top tube (that is EDTA, not heparin) and the resulting whole blood does not need to be separated. The tube(s) should be sent with a cool pack and in a zip lock bag so if anything breaks blood will not damage the papers enclosed (pedigree and cardio reports). Checks for TVD Research should be made out to "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" and in the memo put TVD study and send to Meg Sleeper’s attention at the below address. Samples, reports & donations should be sent to: A previous study evaluated several kindreds of Labrador Retrievers, and determined, through clinical cardiology examinations, pedigree analysis, and genetic analysis, that TVD is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance. Genetic analysis of dogs in the same study mapped a susceptibility locus to canine chromosome 9 (CFA9). It is crucial to continue to examine Labrador retriever kindreds through clinical cardiology examinations, pedigree analysis, and genetic analysis for the future identification of a mutant allele of a gene or genes responsible for TVD. Once found, genetic testing procedures can be developed, which will allow earlier identification of dogs at risk for developing clinical signs, and at risk of passing the disease to their offspring.
