Fine Form: Horse Parade
Racing horses of a different kind will be in town later on in the year and the first one has just
galloped into the studio of local artist PJ Crook.
From August – October there will be a display of ten horses in Horse Parade, an exhibition of lifesize horse sculptures at various locations throughout town. This display will take you from the top
of Montpellier though the town centre and parks up to the Racecourse where you’ll be met by a
horse especially painted to celebrate The Cheltenham Festival’s 100th birthday.
The maquette for the sculpture of the horse has been designed and made by PJ Crook. From this,
the London-based company 3D-Eye (who created the London elephants) have sculpted and cast a
life-size race horse. The individual horses are being sponsored by local organisations and painted
and decorated by local and London based artists.
Sophia Wilson, Exhibitions & Education Manager says
All the cast sculptures will be ready for decoration by the end of May and it will exciting to
see how they are transformed. We will be revealing the other artists and sponsors at the
end of the month.
Editor’s note:
PJ Crook lives in Gloucestershire. Her work is collected both internationally and nationally and her
exhibitions include shows in London, Paris and New York. She works in a distinctive style
recording everyday life sparking our imaginations and inspiring us to be inquisitive as well as enjoy
the paintings in their own right.
Horse Parade is part of Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum’s offsite programme, Off the wall, on
the move. The programme includes exhibitions, events and activities inspired by the horse, our
Stanley Spencer painting, Village Life and our collection of Cheltenham photographs.
Horse Parade also marks the centenary of The Cheltenham Festival, Cheltenham’s most
prestigious sporting event and is organised in partnership with Cheltenham Racecourse.
