BACKGROUND
Organized by the China National Committee for the UNESCO-International Hydrological
Program (UNESCO-IHP) and the Ministry of Water Resources, the International conference
“Hydrology and Disaster Management” (H&DM 2009) will be held during 2-6 November 2009
at the Central International Hotel, Wuhan city, China, in conjunction with the 17th Regional
Steering Committee (RSC) Meeting for the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme for
Southeast Asia and the Pacific (UNESCO-IHP SEAP).
The International Conference will consist of two-days opening ceremonies and technical sessions
(2-3 November 2009) including one day APFRIEND workshop (Asia Pacific FRIEND) on
Tuesday 3 November, one-day technical visit to the Three Gorges reservoir (4 November) and
two-days (5-6 November) for the 17th RSC Meeting.
The general conference themes of Hydrology and Disaster Management are selected in order to
attract from the region a broad range of paper and presentations devoted to several focal areas of
IHP-VII (2008-2013).
It is hoped that water scientists, engineers and other professionals will be attracted not only from
the East Asia and Pacific Region but also from the South and Middle East Asian countries
bordering the Indian Ocean (the entire Monsoon region, in effect). Participants and paper
presenters may as well come from North, Central and South America from across the Pacific
Ocean. This international conference is also an opportunity for Chinese water professionals to
communicate and share their knowledge and experiences with their foreign peers and
counterparts.
OBJECTIVES
The aims of the International Conference “Hydrology and Disaster Management” are to share and
disseminate knowledge, information and technology in hydrological and water sciences, and to
foster cooperative and collaborative activities in several focal areas as a contribution to the five
core Themes of IHP-VII (2008-2013). At the same time, the regional (and global) needs and
experiences for the management of water-related disasters, the development and management of
sustainable water resources, as well as capacity-building of the various interests group such as
stakeholders and professionals, are to be addressed.
This conference is also aiming to stimulate different regional activities such as APFRIEND and
the compilation of Catalogue of Rivers for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
