COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course deals with the theory and practice OF Basic Nursing Care & First Aid (Basic Emergency Care). The course focuses on the assessment and care head injuries, medical emergencies and covering general work in all specialities such as general surgery, medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynecological wards, operating theater, intensive care units (ICU) and Accident & Emergency Department. The course covers areas such as proper clinical assessment & detail of patient, clerking, monitor & charting of vital signs. The course will cover the different anaesthetic techniques and care of patient in the surgical intensive care & besides caring of patient in other critical areas. The student will spend time in the following areas such as: 1. Operating theater - General - Special - Maternity - Shockwaves 2. Critical care units - Surgical - Medical - Coronary - Pediatrics 3. Accident and emergency department - Adult - Pediatrics In order to be exposed the students to real various life emergencies & participate in their management. The practical component of the course will be held at the National Training Center where demonstration and practice on patient assessment, recording of vital signs, caring for unconscious, and management of bleeding and shock. Miscellaneous topics such as suctioning of secretion, oxygen therapy, preparation for blood transfusion, use airway adjuncts, intubation procedure, other resuscitative procedures and peripheral cannulation will also be covered. All students will be certified as provider in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (CPR). Total Credit Hours Lectures = Practical & Assignment = Total Credit Hours 2 hour 6 hours ---------8 hours GOAL OF BASIC EMERGENCY CARE: To provide medical students with knowledge and skills in nursing care, first aid and the concept of basic emergency care which can be utilized during work on the wards, in the Emergency room and in emergency situations arising in everyday life. III. COURSE OBJECTIVES: On completion of the course, the student should: I. Be oriented to the following topics: 1. Ethical issues of patient examination, patient care, hospital policies including policy in Emergency Department Administration. 2. Accurate clinical assessment and charting of vital signs and patients condition in pre-hospital & in hospital settings. 3. Emergency care of multiple trauma and head injury and unconscious patients. 4. Recognition and taking prompt action to prevent or preclude the effects of shock. 5. Recognition of basic information on fluid therapy and its uses. 6. Learn the basis of blood transfusion and its complications. 7. Learn basic patient care and monitoring in critical area. 8. Medical emergencies 9. Surgical emergencies 10. Fracture & dislocation 11. Paediatric, obstetric & gyne emergencies 12. Basic environmental emergencies (heart exhaustion, heart stroke, hypothermia, toxic chemicals etc.) 13. Recognition of medical problems in anaesthetic practice. 14. Scoop of anaesthesia. 15. Introduction to different techniques and practice in anesthetics including general and local anaesthesia. 16. Safety in operating theatre and recovery room. 17. Standard of care and monitoring in anaesthesia. 18. Recognition of post-op chest and cardiac complications and its management. 19. Performance of I.V. cannulation, (peripherally or centrally) 20. Intubation procedures. 21. Learn how to use the various types of airway adjuncts. 22. BLS provider and ACLS course. A full 5 day course. II. Learn proper application of the following: * Insertion of foley’s catheters * Patient hygiene * Oxygen administration via mask or nasal cannula * Preparation of blood transfusion * Various route of drug administration * Insertion of Ryle’s tube * The proper use of suctioning * Other emergencies procedures, abdominal lavage, pericardiocentesis, intraosseous cannulation, relief of tension pneumothorax, etc. * Cut down, lumbar puncture, trancheostomy & the use of mast suit. IV. GRADING & EVALUATION: Grading is according to the University and College Policy Assessment. The student will be evaluated throughout the course by: a.) Attendance 20 b.) Logbook 100 c.) Continuous Assessment - CPR (Basic & Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course) 80 d.) OSCE 100 -----300 Total Student must be courteous, honest and well-mannered during his clinical assessment of the patient. He/she must have nurse attendance during patient clinical assessment. He/she must complete his/her assignment daily in the logbook and ensure that the patient’s admission chart and vital sign sheets are completed. V. COURSE CONTENTS: LECTURES: 1.
